"Life is like a box of chocolates; a useless, frivolous gift that somebody gives you. And if you try to take it back, all you get is another box of chocolates. Oh sure, sometimes there's a caramel, or an English toffee, but too often you are left with a box full of half-eaten cremes and tooth-breaking nuts. And if you get desperate enough to eat those, in the end, all you are left with is a box full of useless brown wrappers."

Hmm. I'm of a number of minds on wristwear -
1) Why bother wearing a watch? The phone is easier to set alarms on, and doesn't make your wrist all itchy when you sweat.
2) Mechanical watches are a thing of beauty, and the design and construction of a fine time movement makes my heart sing. The breathtaking genius of modern autowinders stirs the same part of the soul as exotic italian supercars do. Like supercars, they start at twenty grand for a used model, and go up from there.
3) Practical, handsome timepieces are the handbags of male fashion - women don't look at them twice, men make character judgements of other men on the spot. A 1980's Citizen with elastic stainless steel wristband says a lot about you - that was Dad's or Grandad's watch. Respect. A $500 or $1500 stylish watch on a married man indicates he's happily married - his wife knows her way to the jewelry store. On a single man, it means he's a yuppie tool.
Fox Mulder is apparently a yuppie tool.
And I love oddball tech-fashion esoterica like this. I demand someone come up with the Fox Mulder Pen Survey next.comment:www.metafilter.com,2011:site.103019-3665081Fri, 29 Apr 2011 20:29:50 -0800Slap*HappyBy: hippybear

The X-Files ran from 1993-2002. This is a sampling of the cell phones available in 2002. That's the newest tech that would have been available to Mulder.
There was a time when cell phone didn't have alarms.

You know what else needs doing? "Gross Substances Mulder Pokes".
My favorite is his reluctance to dig into the medical waste pile to find Leonard Betts body. He did anyway just because he's a trooper and wasn't going to be outdone by Scully, who dug in with nonchalance only matched by her autopsy in Bad Blood.

It's not an 'extensive watch brand list' at all though, is it? There's 4 watches identified, 2 vague guesses and 6 'unknowns' and that's it. If Mulder had been as thorough as this on the show, each episode would have seen him coming into his office, taking off his jacket, glancing at a newspaper headline saying 'Weird Lights over Pittsburgh' and doing the crossword for the next 44 minutes.comment:www.metafilter.com,2011:site.103019-3665399Sat, 30 Apr 2011 05:57:39 -0800joannemullenBy: OolooKitty

Man, this takes me back. X-Files fansites! I remember old geocities sites dedicated to Mulder's rare appearances rocking glasses, for instance. (Yeah, I was an adolescent girl with a big yen for nerds, what of it.) Back in those bad old days it took a lot of dedication and, you know, equipment to put together a website with random screen captures from episodes. It basically wasn't worth doing, especially because there wasn't really any way to make any sort of money from a small fansite. Yet somehow people found the time and motivation.
Kinda makes me miss the old, weird internet, seeing things like this. On the other hand, DAMN do I love the "Oh, Dana Scully, No" blog to bits.comment:www.metafilter.com,2011:site.103019-3666547Sun, 01 May 2011 00:53:53 -0800troublesomeBy: Sutekh

The accommodation consisted[Pg 64] of a small bedroom, which he shared with a fellow clerk, and a place at table with the other inmates of the house. The street was very dirty, and Mrs. Flack's house alone presented some sign of decency and respectability. It was a two-storied red brick cottage. There was no front garden, and you entered directly into a living room through a door, upon which a brass plate was fixed that bore the following announcement:¡ª The woman by her side was slowly recovering herself. A minute later and she was her cold calm self again. As a rule, ornament should never be carried further than graceful proportions; the arrangement of framing should follow as nearly as possible the lines of strain. The exhibition of domestic discord and hatred in the House of Hanover had, from its first ascension of the throne, been most odious and revolting. The quarrels of the king and his son, like those of the first two Georges, had begun in Hanover, and had been imported along with them only to assume greater malignancy in foreign and richer soil. The Prince of Wales, whilst still in Germany, had formed a strong attachment to the Princess Royal of Prussia. George forbade the connection. The prince was instantly summoned to England, where he duly arrived in 1728. "But they've been arrested without due process of law.
