Talking about Timmy and wells...
I have a friend whose family, when he was five or so, had a large shed a ways from their house. It had a nice mud pit to play in and an old door leaning against the side. Kid heaven, but perhaps you see where this is going.
My friend was playing on a wet day, and he was doing something with the door but lost contol of it, and it fell on him. He couldn't lift it, and the weight was pushing him into the mud. The way he tells I, it was like an early King story.
Anyway, the family cat saw this and ran to the house and started tagging on my friend's mom. Like "meow!" "what?" "MEOW!" "you want me to follow you?" "MEOOW!!!""This had better be... Holy crap!"
Take that, Lassie!comment:www.metafilter.com,2011:site.107932-3949266Fri, 30 Sep 2011 10:43:51 -0800GenjiandProustBy: Sailormom

As I said over <a href="http://metatalk.metafilter.com/21034/SP-EAK-IN-GI-N-TO-NGU-ES#930507">here</a>, I speak Siamese cat pretty well, and while this isn't exactly that, I think it's close enough to get a pretty good translation.
<em>"so then I was looking at the bird and I was like hey birdy, I'd love to eat you, but it didn't want to come over so I was sad, but then I remembered that I could go over by the tv so I did that for a while and it was neat, and then I fell asleep, yep. Fell right asleep. Didn't mean to, but there you go. Anyway, I woke up and the dog was there, I hate that fucking dog, but he was paying attention to his food, and I snuck right by him. Dumb dog. And then I stood on the counter and sang a little song, but no one liked it so I didn't get any food, but then the dog walked away and I ate some of what was in his bowl, but it was really gross. But I ate it anyway, because fuck the dog. Right? And then I spent some time thinking about what all of you would taste like and that maybe I'd try eating you in your sleep tonight. Hey, is that a camera? Are you going to put this on the internet? I like the internet, I use it when you aren't around to look at pictures of birds. That reminds me, earlier to day I was looking at this bird and I was like hey birdy..."</em>
It seems to just kinda go on like that for a while.

I used to live in this drafty thin-walled apartment building across the hall from this dude who had a cat that babbled and cried exactly like a newborn baby. I mean EXACTLY, to the point that I was half-convinced for at least a month that he was lying about it being a cat and he had a secret stolen baby locked up in there (and at the time I'd owned cats for years, and done a lot of babysitting). It wasn't until I actually saw the cat do it that I could fully believe it was true.
But that was in ye olden days before cell phone cameras and YouTube, so you'll all just have to imagine what an awesome cat video that would have been.comment:www.metafilter.com,2011:site.107932-3949356Fri, 30 Sep 2011 11:17:18 -0800BlueJaeBy: rollick

My cat normally ignores animal sounds reproduced electronically; she seems to know they aren't attached to any animals that are really present. This video brought her over from 100 feet away. She seemed really disturbed by it, and was looking for the cat under the desk where my laptop rests. Of course, as soon as I turned it off, she walked over to me for petting and then got in a bag.comment:www.metafilter.com,2011:site.107932-3950237Fri, 30 Sep 2011 18:17:23 -0800kittens for breakfastBy: zennish

My cat, the best cat, Cat The Cat, only realy WAILED twice.
Once when she was let outside during a huge thunderstorm and got to the windowsill and just screamed, until we opened te window.
When one of her kittens did in fact get stuck under the house and she was all "MEOW!" human! look at me! Follow me! MEOW! Are you following!? MEOW! things.
The only other time she's talk was if, when carrying her, her brought her someplace she didn'like, She would Mewarp! first, and then, if you persisted, dig her claws into your shoulder.comment:www.metafilter.com,2011:site.107932-3950383Fri, 30 Sep 2011 21:24:58 -0800The WhelkBy: qxntpqbbbqxl

When she wants to but it's not time to go out she pouts by complaining ("Mow!"). She plaintively mews when she wants food, looking as cute as possible, until we get closer to her dish, then she starts in to her scratchy insistent whining noises. She will have conversations but expects you to understand her, otherwise her patience wears a little thin.comment:www.metafilter.com,2011:site.107932-3950798Sat, 01 Oct 2011 09:57:38 -0800krinklyfigBy: krinklyfig

I will have to play her this when I get home. I have a feeling she'll react.comment:www.metafilter.com,2011:site.107932-3950799Sat, 01 Oct 2011 09:57:58 -0800krinklyfigBy: krinklyfig

No, I was wrong. My cat seemed to react very slightly at first then completely ignored the sound as she rubbed around under my chair. She was much more interested in how much affection she could get from me, which is her SOP.comment:www.metafilter.com,2011:site.107932-3951063Sat, 01 Oct 2011 13:43:59 -0800krinklyfigBy: Spatch

My housemate has taken to responding to the cat with "Use your words!"
I figure hell, the cat's already learned to raise his inflection at the end of a meow to convey a question or demand. He's <i>got</i> his words. We're just not bright enough to always pick up on 'em.
His "Feed me <i>pleeeeeease?</i>" meow is different than his "Hi, I'm just walking into the room, don't mind me, just a cat walking through a room where everybody is, don't pay me no attention" meow. When he thinks he's alone in the house, he'll sit in the hall and make echolocation "Are you there?" meows. If I'm anywhere around, I'll holler "Polo!" back and he'll come running. And his "I'm about to thrOW-WO-WO-WO up" meow is unmistakable, though when he does that it usually means he's got something worse than just a hairball coming up. I played this for our cats. One cat came up to me, crawled under the duvet, then jumped down onto the floor and commenced trying to hump Other Cat.
So, er, take that as you wish.comment:www.metafilter.com,2011:site.107932-3952019Sun, 02 Oct 2011 15:49:43 -0800subbesBy: deborah

Two cats (siblings) got all big eyed and concerned looking and stared at my computer. Then they both took off. The other pair of siblings ignored it. Weird.
Also, the mister and I frequently ask <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/silverbees/6111158392/in/photostream">Kaylee</a> if Timmy is caught in the well when she wants something.comment:www.metafilter.com,2011:site.107932-3956541Tue, 04 Oct 2011 22:37:18 -0800deborahBy: homunculus

"Yes. Something that interested us yesterday when we saw it." "Where is she?" His lodgings were situated at the lower end of the town. The accommodation consisted[Pg 64] of a small bedroom, which he shared with a fellow clerk, and a place at table with the other inmates of the house. The street was very dirty, and Mrs. Flack's house alone presented some sign of decency and respectability. It was a two-storied red brick cottage. There was no front garden, and you entered directly into a living room through a door, upon which a brass plate was fixed that bore the following announcement:¡ª The woman by her side was slowly recovering herself. A minute later and she was her cold calm self again. As a rule, ornament should never be carried further than graceful proportions; the arrangement of framing should follow as nearly as possible the lines of strain. Extraneous decoration, such as detached filagree work of iron, or painting in colours, is [159] so repulsive to the taste of the true engineer and mechanic that it is unnecessary to speak against it. Dear Daddy, Schopenhauer for tomorrow. The professor doesn't seem to realize Down the middle of the Ganges a white bundle is being borne, and on it a crow pecking the body of a child wrapped in its winding-sheet. 53 The attention of the public was now again drawn to those unnatural feuds which disturbed the Royal Family. The exhibition of domestic discord and hatred in the House of Hanover had, from its first ascension of the throne, been most odious and revolting. The quarrels of the king and his son, like those of the first two Georges, had begun in Hanover, and had been imported along with them only to assume greater malignancy in foreign and richer soil. The Prince of Wales, whilst still in Germany, had formed a strong attachment to the Princess Royal of Prussia. George forbade the connection. The prince was instantly summoned to England, where he duly arrived in 1728. "But they've been arrested without due process of law. They've been arrested in violation of the Constitution and laws of the State of Indiana, which provide¡ª" "I know of Marvor and will take you to him. It is not far to where he stays." Reuben did not go to the Fair that autumn¡ªthere being no reason why he should and several why he shouldn't. He went instead to see Richard, who was down for a week's rest after a tiring case. Reuben thought a dignified aloofness the best attitude to maintain towards his son¡ªthere was no need for them to be on bad terms, but he did not want anyone to imagine that he approved of Richard or thought his success worth while. Richard, for his part, felt kindly disposed towards his father, and a little sorry for him in his isolation. He invited him to dinner once or twice, and, realising his picturesqueness, was not ashamed to show him to his friends. Stephen Holgrave ascended the marble steps, and proceeded on till he stood at the baron's feet. He then unclasped the belt of his waist, and having his head uncovered, knelt down, and holding up both his hands.
