In honor of International Women's Day and Women's History Month, the Smithsonian Institution Archives (SIA) is pleased to present <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/smithsonian/sets/72157614810586267/with/4405670925/">a sampling of images documenting women scientists and engineers from around the world</a>, most of whom were pioneers in their respective fields, or were the first women to receive advanced graduate degrees in their discipline (<a href="http://boingboing.net/2012/03/23/historic-photos-of-female-scie.html">via</a>). <br /><br />Since adding photos to flickr, archivists have been able to <a href="http://blogs.smithsonianmag.com/aroundthemall/2012/03/do-you-know-this-face-the-smithsonian-needs-help-identifying-these-women-scientists/">fill in the blanks</a> in the lives of some of these pioneering women in science. Just out of curiosity, do we know the selection criterion here? Because Marie Curie is right there on page one (my pet peeve is that Marie Curie is trotted out so often that you'd think the sciences were all men and Her) but a lot of others I can think of do not seem to appear, including <a href="http://collections.si.edu/search/results.jsp?q=maud+menten&tag.cstype=all">Maud Menten</a> or <a href="http://collections.si.edu/search/results.jsp?q=rosalyn+yalow&tag.cstype=all">Rosalyn Yalow</a>, though this may have more to do with Flickr's search ability and my not spotting them.
