An Anna's hummingbird on a tiny nest, smaller than an ivy leaf, with two hatchlings therein. Watch it live.

Bonus bit of trivia: Baby hummingbirds have short, stubby, yellow beaks. The babies can double in size each day. As they grow, and move closer to being able to feed on their own, their nectar-friendly beaks grow as well.

The bush right outside my patio door is now on its third year of hosting an Anna's nest. The nest is reused every year (I assume by the same bird but am not sure. Also, the branch the nest is built on has been dead for two years but I refuse to cut it off) and she just adds another cup on top along with fresh spider webs and bits of lichen around the sides. Mom is utterly fearless: the nest is less than a foot from a heavily traveled doorway and she'll just sit there and give you tiny birdy stinkeye if you look her way. I know when the eggs have hatched because the mother bird starts flying nearly nonstop from dawn to dusk, returning to the nest every few minutes to feed the babies. The sound she makes as she returns sounds like BRUUUMMMMMM! Pip! Pip! Pip!
The babies are awesome: they grow as big as the nest cup so they stack up two deep, taking turns being the bottom bird. When they get closer to fledging, they stand on the rim of the nest and furiously flap, lifting up the top edge of the nest with them. Eventually one lets go and ascends straight up, then the other fledgling does the same and the nest is empty again until the next spring.comment:www.metafilter.com,2012:site.114939-4296830Mon, 16 Apr 2012 13:07:12 -0800jamaroBy: TheWhiteSkull

I think if that had been my bit of ivy I would have tried to figure out a way to shelter it. Most of the hummingbird nests I've seen have been in relatively sheltered or on relatively stable places- they used to build nests on the staked vines in the nursery I worked at, often on the flat top of the 1X1 stake.
I hope the little ones will be able to avoid falling out when they get larger. I'm sure birds generally know what they're doing re: nest building, but sometimes plants grow and vines fall down. From what I understand, hummingbirds need nest sites that stay below 96 degrees F and are out of the wind. :/comment:www.metafilter.com,2012:site.114939-4296898Mon, 16 Apr 2012 13:48:09 -0800oneirodyniaBy: oneirodynia

If nothing's happening live, here are few screenshots of the chicks alone in the nest, being fed, and with the mother sitting on the nest again.comment:www.metafilter.com,2012:site.114939-4297085Mon, 16 Apr 2012 16:05:25 -0800JiBBBy: Katjusa Roquette

The little buggers haven't made their way back to our feeders yet. As someone who spent his first full summer watching them last year, I will never cease to be enraptured by them.comment:www.metafilter.com,2012:site.114939-4297499Mon, 16 Apr 2012 20:48:20 -0800holgateBy: Goofyy

Thanks for the herons! I have lots of herons around here in Switzerland. To my surprise, I caught one on video, eating a rat or something about that size, in a pasture. I'm used to seeing them fishing in the rivers here.comment:www.metafilter.com,2012:site.114939-4299828Wed, 18 Apr 2012 08:44:30 -0800Goofyy
"Yes. Something that interested us yesterday when we saw it." "Where is she?" His lodgings were situated at the lower end of the town. The accommodation consisted[Pg 64] of a small bedroom, which he shared with a fellow clerk, and a place at table with the other inmates of the house. The street was very dirty, and Mrs. Flack's house alone presented some sign of decency and respectability. It was a two-storied red brick cottage. There was no front garden, and you entered directly into a living room through a door, upon which a brass plate was fixed that bore the following announcement:¡ª The woman by her side was slowly recovering herself. A minute later and she was her cold calm self again. As a rule, ornament should never be carried further than graceful proportions; the arrangement of framing should follow as nearly as possible the lines of strain. Extraneous decoration, such as detached filagree work of iron, or painting in colours, is [159] so repulsive to the taste of the true engineer and mechanic that it is unnecessary to speak against it. Dear Daddy, Schopenhauer for tomorrow. The professor doesn't seem to realize Down the middle of the Ganges a white bundle is being borne, and on it a crow pecking the body of a child wrapped in its winding-sheet. 53 The attention of the public was now again drawn to those unnatural feuds which disturbed the Royal Family. The exhibition of domestic discord and hatred in the House of Hanover had, from its first ascension of the throne, been most odious and revolting. The quarrels of the king and his son, like those of the first two Georges, had begun in Hanover, and had been imported along with them only to assume greater malignancy in foreign and richer soil. The Prince of Wales, whilst still in Germany, had formed a strong attachment to the Princess Royal of Prussia. George forbade the connection. The prince was instantly summoned to England, where he duly arrived in 1728. "But they've been arrested without due process of law. They've been arrested in violation of the Constitution and laws of the State of Indiana, which provide¡ª" "I know of Marvor and will take you to him. It is not far to where he stays." Reuben did not go to the Fair that autumn¡ªthere being no reason why he should and several why he shouldn't. He went instead to see Richard, who was down for a week's rest after a tiring case. Reuben thought a dignified aloofness the best attitude to maintain towards his son¡ªthere was no need for them to be on bad terms, but he did not want anyone to imagine that he approved of Richard or thought his success worth while. Richard, for his part, felt kindly disposed towards his father, and a little sorry for him in his isolation. He invited him to dinner once or twice, and, realising his picturesqueness, was not ashamed to show him to his friends. Stephen Holgrave ascended the marble steps, and proceeded on till he stood at the baron's feet. He then unclasped the belt of his waist, and having his head uncovered, knelt down, and holding up both his hands. De Boteler took them within his own, and the yeoman said in a loud, distinct voice¡ª HoME²¨¶àÒ°´²Ï·ÊÓƵ ѸÀ×ÏÂÔØ ѸÀ×ÏÂÔØ
