<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n-NwLUPZWZc">Decay</a> is a free, <a href="http://www.decayfilm.com/pages/download.html">downloadable</a> zombie film set entirely at the Large Hadron Collider at <a href="http://public.web.cern.ch/public/en/lhc/lhc-en.html">CERN</a>. <br /><br /><a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=luNueXoAw3I">Trailer</a>. In the film, the zombies are created from exposure to the <a href="http://www.guardian.co.uk/science/2012/dec/23/brian-cox-higgs-boson-particle">newly-discovered</a> Higgs boson particle. <small>(<a href="http://www.metafilter.com/117509/How-I-learned-to-stop-worrying-and-love-reductionism">Previously</a> on Mefi.)</small> It was written and directed by <a href="http://www.hep.manchester.ac.uk/u/luket/">Luke Thompson</a>, a Ph.D. accelerator physics student.

hmm.. my theory is that the wretch made by Frankenstein was the original modern zombie and since Mary Shelley wrote it in the same area as the LHC that's pretty full circle, so to speak. But in the novel the wretch was made using non-science ie. alchemy and other dark arts. But these LHC zombies are created by science, which means we can understand them, which makes them less believable. A better story would have been a young scientist who uses the LHC to conduct tests using unsound science eg. Dianetics or cold fusion or something, and mysteriously the zombies are created (mysteriously because we can never understand something outside of science). Even better, the young scientist conducted the tests using the same books mentioned in <i>Frankenstein</i> in creating the creature. Nothing like dusty old tombs from the middle ages mixed in with the LHC.comment:www.metafilter.com,2012:site.123166-4746072Sun, 23 Dec 2012 00:36:03 -0800stbalbachBy: six-or-six-thirty

you think working at CERN might be awesome but you are only half right:
the people are awesome
the setting is also awesome

I can now look forward to hearing the gold-hoarding, conspiracy believing wingnut in my neighborhood tell me this actually happened and that Obama's planning to unleash Armageddon by using HAARP to transmit "monster rays" as part of his vaccination-mandated healthcare package.comment:www.metafilter.com,2012:site.123166-4746088Sun, 23 Dec 2012 01:36:49 -0800Smart DalekBy: J.W.

<em>Looks like somebody's been playing way too much Half-Life.</em>
I was under the impression that this wasn't possible based on an interaction with a high school friend; I was complaining to him that I felt like my boyfriend didn't always want to spend time with me, that he liked video games more and that he only came over to play my brother's copy of Half-Life. My friend looked at me earnestly and said "Well, Half-Life is a really good game."
This has been the tone of much of my life.comment:www.metafilter.com,2012:site.123166-4746113Sun, 23 Dec 2012 03:52:27 -0800Mrs. PterodactylBy: marienbad

Foolish nonsense, Smart Dalek. The HAARP is for mind control/weather control, not some foolish "monster rays" whatever they might be.comment:www.metafilter.com,2012:site.123166-4746143Sun, 23 Dec 2012 05:39:51 -0800marienbadBy: pxe2000

In some weird serendipity, Mrs. physicsmatt and I watched this on Friday and loved it. The acting is so-so to terrible, but the mood they set is awesome.
Also, the production company is called H2ZZ, which is one of the main decay channels of the Higgs boson (Higgs to ZZ). I'm still laughing about that, sadly. And cracking up about "Higgs radiation." But seriously folks, don't go down into the tunnels when the beam is on, that's just bad.
Finally, as your resident particle physicist, I assure you there are no plans to create a zombie horde at CERN. That would get in the way of our plans to open a gateway for the many-angled ones who dwell in the dimensions perpendicular to our own.comment:www.metafilter.com,2012:site.123166-4746203Sun, 23 Dec 2012 08:09:31 -0800physicsmattBy: Jehan

"Yes. Something that interested us yesterday when we saw it." "Where is she?" His lodgings were situated at the lower end of the town. The accommodation consisted[Pg 64] of a small bedroom, which he shared with a fellow clerk, and a place at table with the other inmates of the house. The street was very dirty, and Mrs. Flack's house alone presented some sign of decency and respectability. It was a two-storied red brick cottage. There was no front garden, and you entered directly into a living room through a door, upon which a brass plate was fixed that bore the following announcement:¡ª The woman by her side was slowly recovering herself. A minute later and she was her cold calm self again. As a rule, ornament should never be carried further than graceful proportions; the arrangement of framing should follow as nearly as possible the lines of strain. Extraneous decoration, such as detached filagree work of iron, or painting in colours, is [159] so repulsive to the taste of the true engineer and mechanic that it is unnecessary to speak against it. Dear Daddy, Schopenhauer for tomorrow. The exhibition of domestic discord and hatred in the House of Hanover had, from its first ascension of the throne, been most odious and revolting. The quarrels of the king and his son, like those of the first two Georges, had begun in Hanover, and had been imported along with them only to assume greater malignancy in foreign and richer soil. The Prince of Wales, whilst still in Germany, had formed a strong attachment to the Princess Royal of Prussia. George forbade the connection. The prince was instantly summoned to England, where he duly arrived in 1728. "But they've been arrested without due process of law. Reuben did not go to the Fair that autumn¡ªthere being no reason why he should and several why he shouldn't. He went instead to see Richard, who was down for a week's rest after a tiring case. Reuben thought a dignified aloofness the best attitude to maintain towards his son¡ªthere was no need for them to be on bad terms, but he did not want anyone to imagine that he approved of Richard or thought his success worth while. Richard, for his part, felt kindly disposed towards his father, and a little sorry for him in his isolation. He invited him to dinner once or twice, and, realising his picturesqueness, was not ashamed to show him to his friends.
