after the success of the WNBA how could this not have been the next logical step? i'm sure this will be incredibly popular. it will rival the XFL. unless there are lesbian shower hidden cams there is no chance in hell of this getting any interest.comment:www.metafilter.com,2001:site.12322-173765Tue, 13 Nov 2001 21:18:12 -0800suprfliBy: billder

I bet the women playing are interested, and I bet they will generate a loyal following.
I hated football all of my life, until someone made me sit still through a game or two (okay, Dennis Miller helped). Now I think it's an intelligent, interesting sport that can be incredibly exciting at times. I'd go to these games to see how women play, to see what differences they bring to the sport. Which is what I like about the WNBA and women's college basketball.
Beautiful logos, too. I want official shirts!comment:www.metafilter.com,2001:site.12322-173772Tue, 13 Nov 2001 21:34:43 -0800kittyloopBy: Monk

They want to play football, great, good on 'em.
Unfortunately, they'll never make it big time and I don't think they really expect to. I hope they have a great time and wish them all the success. They'll certainly end up being nicer people than most of the overpaid, uneducated, crybaby boys playing pro.
And if you think women can't play sports as tough as football then you ought to watch a women's rugby match one day, they don't muck around.comment:www.metafilter.com,2001:site.12322-173781Tue, 13 Nov 2001 21:47:54 -0800Option1By: MiguelCardoso

Or field hockey. Can't get more Talibanesque than that. I still have nightmares from my school days, of those stick-wielding ten-year-old Amazons mindlessly bashing each other's scar-ridden shins. It was so violent we boys were unable to enjoy the frequent glimpses of their dark blue, waist-high, industrial-strength panties.comment:www.metafilter.com,2001:site.12322-173802Tue, 13 Nov 2001 22:15:25 -0800MiguelCardosoBy: owillis

Well, my Jaguars offensive line has proven that they can stop a potential sack about as effectively as a tub of whipped cream can stop a bullet. I mean no one, but no one, sucks worse than these guys do this season. So I'm actively looking for new teams to cheer for. I'm gonna watch these women with an open mind, and know that even if they're godawful, watching them won't be as painful as having the name of your hometown slammed into the mud every time the QB takes a snap.
Sorry...had to get that off my chest.comment:www.metafilter.com,2001:site.12322-173819Tue, 13 Nov 2001 22:36:50 -0800OptamysticBy: lucien

Yeah, Women are only good for one thing, right? They don't have lives of their own, or dreams to pursue. If they do, let's cut 'em down at the start and turn teach them once and for all what they are - sex objects.
Comments such as this, well it's a power thing of course, sexual repression is all about power....and at it's foundation considerable feelings of inadequacy on the part of those who try to wield the power.comment:www.metafilter.com,2001:site.12322-173848Wed, 14 Nov 2001 00:01:51 -0800lucienBy: eoz

WAFL? What, was PANCAKE taken?
Don't knock WAFL! My state's (West. Australia's) local Australian rules league is called the WAFL. They tried changing it to Weststar or something stupid like that a year or two ago, and the idea flopped. WAFL is just such a better name.
Anyway, back on track...
Here's hoping the Women's American Football League gets plenty of media attention and whatnot - I'm getting sick of women's leagues getting no attention and only a small following.comment:www.metafilter.com,2001:site.12322-173851Wed, 14 Nov 2001 00:06:06 -0800eozBy: MiguelCardoso

Right, lucien. There's an old Portuguese saying: "When you hear the word woman think of your mother, your sister and your daughter". It's remarkable how effectively it curbs casual male chauvinism. Optamystic: So you stop supporting your team when they stop winning? What kind of a fan are you?
Good luck to the women, although I think they've got their work cut out. American football is an expensive game, which requires a lot of equipment and training. Considering the difficulties of women's soccer and basketball, which are comparitively simpler sports, I think they will find it hard.comment:www.metafilter.com,2001:site.12322-173877Wed, 14 Nov 2001 02:01:04 -0800salmacisBy: Optamystic

No, sal..I love my team. But it hurts to see Mark Brunell beaten within an inch of his life every Sunday. I'll still love the Jaguars, but at this point, I'm pretty sure it's gonna be a masochistic love. So if I wanna have any kind of "winner's rush", I'm gonna have to expand my sports horizons.comment:www.metafilter.com,2001:site.12322-173886Wed, 14 Nov 2001 03:17:59 -0800OptamysticBy: Carol Anne

Here in Chicago, we don't have a WNBA team. The reason is purely monetary. A call was put out a few months ago in the news and local papers that if (I believe) 5,000 people pledged to buy season passes for the Chicago team, then the WNBA would go ahead and do it.
Failed. Fell way short.
It gets me wondering why that is. I know that I really don't watch women's sports, but then I don't watch many sports at all - outside of baseball and an occasional game of bowling (the latter has very strong female participation.)
What I wonder is, are any of the sports dominated by men doomed to fail as women's sports? Are people simply not comfortable with idea, or is the outmoded stereotype that women "can't do it the same" in play here? Or is it simply because of money?comment:www.metafilter.com,2001:site.12322-174035Wed, 14 Nov 2001 07:56:32 -0800hijinxBy: darth_smoothies

"Yes. Something that interested us yesterday when we saw it." "Where is she?" His lodgings were situated at the lower end of the town. The accommodation consisted[Pg 64] of a small bedroom, which he shared with a fellow clerk, and a place at table with the other inmates of the house. The street was very dirty, and Mrs. Flack's house alone presented some sign of decency and respectability. It was a two-storied red brick cottage. There was no front garden, and you entered directly into a living room through a door, upon which a brass plate was fixed that bore the following announcement:¡ª The woman by her side was slowly recovering herself. A minute later and she was her cold calm self again. As a rule, ornament should never be carried further than graceful proportions; the arrangement of framing should follow as nearly as possible the lines of strain. Extraneous decoration, such as detached filagree work of iron, or painting in colours, is [159] so repulsive to the taste of the true engineer and mechanic that it is unnecessary to speak against it. Dear Daddy, Schopenhauer for tomorrow. The professor doesn't seem to realize Down the middle of the Ganges a white bundle is being borne, and on it a crow pecking the body of a child wrapped in its winding-sheet. 53 The attention of the public was now again drawn to those unnatural feuds which disturbed the Royal Family. The exhibition of domestic discord and hatred in the House of Hanover had, from its first ascension of the throne, been most odious and revolting. The quarrels of the king and his son, like those of the first two Georges, had begun in Hanover, and had been imported along with them only to assume greater malignancy in foreign and richer soil. The Prince of Wales, whilst still in Germany, had formed a strong attachment to the Princess Royal of Prussia. George forbade the connection. The prince was instantly summoned to England, where he duly arrived in 1728. "But they've been arrested without due process of law. They've been arrested in violation of the Constitution and laws of the State of Indiana, which provide¡ª" "I know of Marvor and will take you to him. It is not far to where he stays." Reuben did not go to the Fair that autumn¡ªthere being no reason why he should and several why he shouldn't. He went instead to see Richard, who was down for a week's rest after a tiring case. Reuben thought a dignified aloofness the best attitude to maintain towards his son¡ªthere was no need for them to be on bad terms, but he did not want anyone to imagine that he approved of Richard or thought his success worth while. Richard, for his part, felt kindly disposed towards his father, and a little sorry for him in his isolation. He invited him to dinner once or twice, and, realising his picturesqueness, was not ashamed to show him to his friends. Stephen Holgrave ascended the marble steps, and proceeded on till he stood at the baron's feet. He then unclasped the belt of his waist, and having his head uncovered, knelt down, and holding up both his hands.
