Normally July's neurotic performance piece videos annoy the hell out of me but this? This I liked. I think cause of John C. Reily's ability to shove that amount of pathos and nervous energy into his face.comment:www.metafilter.com,2013:site.125996-4872872Fri, 15 Mar 2013 07:01:43 -0800The WhelkBy: The Whelk

Like ...he seems perfect for this cause almost all of July's stuff has adults acting like kids in a way that makes adults uncomfortable cause they are being actually childlike and not how adults want kids to act and Reilly, for whatever reason, can pull off "confused and earnest seven year old" really, really well. It's like a cornerstone of his comic persona.comment:www.metafilter.com,2013:site.125996-4872928Fri, 15 Mar 2013 07:55:15 -0800The WhelkBy: maryr

<blockquote><u>The Orange</u>
At lunchtime I bought a huge orange—
The size of it made us all laugh.
I peeled it and shared it with Robert and Dave—
They got quarters and I got a half.
And that orange, it made me so happy,
As ordinary things often do
Just lately. The shopping. A walk in the park.
This is peace and contentment. It's new.
The rest of the day was quite easy.
I did all the jobs on my list
And enjoyed them and had some time over.
I love you. I'm glad I exist.

Jesus, maryr, that's beautiful. Thanks for sharing.
As for the video, I'm one of 'those people' who's all, "What's with the oranges? Why are they in there? What do they have to do with anything?"
And then it inspires the sharing of an awesome poem, so there's that.comment:www.metafilter.com,2013:site.125996-4872986Fri, 15 Mar 2013 08:39:39 -0800PhreeshBy: Shepherd

I liked that. Thank you for linking it.
John C. Reilly falls in an interesting category for me -- my love for him is inversely proportional to the amount of effort he's putting into his acting. The less he seems to be trying, the more charming and engaging I find him.
The other person that falls into this category is Ben Affleck, oddly enough.comment:www.metafilter.com,2013:site.125996-4873073Fri, 15 Mar 2013 09:28:37 -0800ShepherdBy: Lipstick Thespian

Mr. Rogers likes me, and thinks I'm special. There's only one person exactly like me in the world, and people can love me just the way I am. It's because I make every day a special day just by being me. I don't have to be anything more than what I am for people to like me.
Mr Rogers will always have all of us as equal favourites.comment:www.metafilter.com,2013:site.125996-4873143Fri, 15 Mar 2013 10:13:16 -0800jaduncanBy: Jody Tresidder

I'm not really sure I get this - it's a few tender moments of miscommunication with a droll (the oranges) twist?

I remembered hearing something about this - about the story behind the film - and found it on <a href="http://numerocinqmagazine.com/2011/10/06/numero-cinqs-thursday-night-at-the-movies-miranda-july-and-miguel-artetas-are-you-the-favourite-person-of-anybody-introduced-by-r-w-gray/">another website</a>:
<em>What intrigues me here more though is the intimate story around the story. How Miranda July had just finished shooting Me and You and Everyone We Know and had nothing to do until the editor came back with a rough cut – a peculiar waiting. So she wrote these sketches. Showed them to Arteta who she was dating at the time. Arteta rushed them to shoot and cast July, Mike White (the writer of Chuck & Buck, which Arteta directed) and Chuy Chavez (July's DP on Me and You and Everyone We Know).
Arteta, in an interview in Wholphin confesses what the script meant to him: "When I read it, it hit me hard for the first time: I wasn't going to be [July's] favorite person for too much longer. I was having doubts about us and the script felt like a warning . . . I said 'Let's shoot this, right away' – knowing that working together was something I would always cherish"
In her Wholphin interview, July confesses she was excited to just act. It was something she committed herself to so strongly that when she walked away from John C. Reilly, exiting her scene with him, and no one called cut, she just kept on walking. "I walked practically to the next neighborhood before anyone noticed I was gone." These are the interstitial stories I believe imbue films.</em>comment:www.metafilter.com,2013:site.125996-4873205Fri, 15 Mar 2013 10:55:34 -0800235w103By: StopMakingSense

Speaking of oranges, I've always thought the Cope above paired well with this French poem:
<blockquote><u>Alicante</u>
Une orange sur la table
Ta robe sur le tapis
Et toi dans mon lit
Doux présent du présent
Fraîcheur de la nuit
Chaleur de ma vie.

One of the great things about the days when everyone shot on film was that filmstock was precious so short films were often really short. And almost any sort of visual effect cost money.
Somehow I can't imagine anyone doing anything as short, sweet and simple as this on video.

I suspect maybe a relative or two would say that I am their favorite person, but I know they would be lying. I've done nothing to deserve being anyone's favorite person, and, in fact, I've lived in a way that guarantees I'm not.
That's fine by me, and, yes, I would like three home-grown oranges, please.comment:www.metafilter.com,2013:site.125996-4873672Fri, 15 Mar 2013 14:49:10 -0800dgaicunBy: MiltonRandKalman

"Yes. Something that interested us yesterday when we saw it." "Where is she?" His lodgings were situated at the lower end of the town. The accommodation consisted[Pg 64] of a small bedroom, which he shared with a fellow clerk, and a place at table with the other inmates of the house. The street was very dirty, and Mrs. Flack's house alone presented some sign of decency and respectability. It was a two-storied red brick cottage. There was no front garden, and you entered directly into a living room through a door, upon which a brass plate was fixed that bore the following announcement:¡ª The woman by her side was slowly recovering herself. A minute later and she was her cold calm self again. As a rule, ornament should never be carried further than graceful proportions; the arrangement of framing should follow as nearly as possible the lines of strain. Extraneous decoration, such as detached filagree work of iron, or painting in colours, is [159] so repulsive to the taste of the true engineer and mechanic that it is unnecessary to speak against it. Dear Daddy, Schopenhauer for tomorrow. The professor doesn't seem to realize Down the middle of the Ganges a white bundle is being borne, and on it a crow pecking the body of a child wrapped in its winding-sheet. 53 The attention of the public was now again drawn to those unnatural feuds which disturbed the Royal Family. The exhibition of domestic discord and hatred in the House of Hanover had, from its first ascension of the throne, been most odious and revolting. The quarrels of the king and his son, like those of the first two Georges, had begun in Hanover, and had been imported along with them only to assume greater malignancy in foreign and richer soil. The Prince of Wales, whilst still in Germany, had formed a strong attachment to the Princess Royal of Prussia. George forbade the connection. The prince was instantly summoned to England, where he duly arrived in 1728. "But they've been arrested without due process of law. They've been arrested in violation of the Constitution and laws of the State of Indiana, which provide¡ª" "I know of Marvor and will take you to him. It is not far to where he stays." Reuben did not go to the Fair that autumn¡ªthere being no reason why he should and several why he shouldn't. He went instead to see Richard, who was down for a week's rest after a tiring case. Reuben thought a dignified aloofness the best attitude to maintain towards his son¡ªthere was no need for them to be on bad terms, but he did not want anyone to imagine that he approved of Richard or thought his success worth while. Richard, for his part, felt kindly disposed towards his father, and a little sorry for him in his isolation. He invited him to dinner once or twice, and, realising his picturesqueness, was not ashamed to show him to his friends. Stephen Holgrave ascended the marble steps, and proceeded on till he stood at the baron's feet. He then unclasped the belt of his waist, and having his head uncovered, knelt down, and holding up both his hands.
