Perhaps you've seen a shorter version of Heineken's commercial "The Odyssey" on television. If you haven't seen the full-length piece, or if you haven't watched closely, you may not realize that the lead role is played by 20 different men, each "legendary" in his own way. Heineken has created an interactive version of the short advertising film, allowing you to click on each non-actor to see his casting interview. (Or you can just let it play and watch each man in his turn.) [total time ~48m]

I assumed it was all CG and clever editing. It never even occurred to me that there were actually different people doing all those stunts.

I unironically appreciate it it when an ad agency decides, "Screw it. We're gonna make us some surrealist art and get a megaconglomerate to foot the bill." The candy commercials - "Great Feasters in History" that had a viking, a roman emperor, a pilgrim, a polynesian and Henry VIII cruising convenience stores in a '96 Ford Taurus, the man who makes anything he touches into Skittles... the deodorant commercials with the Unreasonably Attractive Man warping reality around him... the "Real Men of Genius" radio spots ("Here's to you, Mr. Taco Salad Eater...") They sure as shit don't make me want to buy the product (Heineken? Snickers? Old Spice? Bud Light? Ick.) but I really enjoy the spectacle and humor. The concept for this one is genius, the execution superb, and the details - the costuming! Oh, those cruise passengers were some smartly attired folks... and they did it all in broad daylight. Controlling light so it appears natural during a cloudless mid-day, without sharp shadows and blown out highlights, is about the toughest technical challenge in videography, but they nailed it, effects and all.

Hrm, I thought it was obvious they were different people. It is, if you're paying attention to the ad. The first couple of times I saw the ad, it was in a sports bar, so I wasn't really watching at all. Then after the third time, I spotted it again and was thinking to myself that the bearded guy looked different from the last time I saw the ad, but thought maybe I was just seeing things. Then, when it was shown again, I actually watched the ad and finally confirmed it was a different guy each scene. So, at the very least, the ad did it's job of making me watch it a little more intently than the million other beer ads that play.

Apart from getting away with making a piece of art, the whole notion of having a skill (let's say ...delivering a devastating chat up line in Finnish) which is ridiculously specialist but in which one is super-proficient, is an important insight into the psyche of male beer drinkers everywhere.
