I've been listening to the Hugo nominated podcasts this past week and I really like The Coode Street Podcast, Galactic Suburbia and The Writer and The Critic. All three run roughly an hour or more in lenght and are nicely crunchy about books.comment:www.metafilter.com,2014:site.140678-5626505Tue, 08 Jul 2014 12:14:49 -0800MartinWisseBy: Greg_Ace

I have such love for both Escape Pod and Starshipsofa - but I am one of those cranky old fans who thinks they were best where SSsofa was two scottish guys on a couch and Escape pod was just Stephen Ely - they have never been as exciting as around episode 50 of both imo.comment:www.metafilter.com,2014:site.140678-5626604Tue, 08 Jul 2014 12:38:03 -0800Another Fine Product From The Nonsense FactoryBy: Stacey

I'm just starting to dig into the Hugo podcasts, too. SF Squeecast is an old favorite but the rest are new to me. I tried and failed to get into Tea and Jeopardy this morning, and am thinking Writer and the Critic should accompany me on my bus ride home today.comment:www.metafilter.com,2014:site.140678-5626605Tue, 08 Jul 2014 12:38:15 -0800StaceyBy: Scattercat

No way there are 50 podcast SF stories better than <a href="http://cdn2.libsyn.com/starshipsofa/Ted_Chiang_The_Merchant_and_the_Alchemists_Gate.mp3">this reading</a> of Ted Chiang's "The Merchant and the Alchemist's Gate" (from StarShipSofa), including that (admittedly very good) reading of Chiang's "Exhalation" sitting at #9.comment:www.metafilter.com,2014:site.140678-5626665Tue, 08 Jul 2014 12:55:44 -0800straightBy: wenestvedt

It's already a lyric in a "Margaritaville" filk, actually.

Escape Pod was one of the first podcasts I ever listened to. I've been a listener since the very beginning, and it's really wonderful to have something filling the space in the world where old radio dramas like X-1 used to be.
I've gotten way behind on my Escape Pod and Podcastle episodes. They had a big pledge drive a few months ago, because Escape Artists was basically running out of money because they are too popular. It reminded me both that I had a lot of episodes to catch up on, and that the world with Escape Pod and Podcastle is better than one without them.
So now I'm donating (you should too!), and I've got like 70 short stories queued up, which is great!comment:www.metafilter.com,2014:site.140678-5627016Tue, 08 Jul 2014 13:59:06 -0800JDHarperBy: Greg_Ace

Well, it wasn't even the "too popular" thing so much as "We pay authors pro rates and like one percent of our listeners ever give us any money." We're doing much better now, thank you. :-)comment:www.metafilter.com,2014:site.140678-5627506Tue, 08 Jul 2014 15:47:14 -0800ScattercatBy: Archer25

I'll second <strong>straight</strong>'s recommendation for the reading of <strong>The Merchant and the Alchemist's Gate</strong>. I listened to it while at a retreat. I had to leave everyone else and walk around listening till it was done. Tears may have fallen. It sticks in my mind like few other stories ever have.
I listen to a lot of the podcasts listed. I like story podcasts, but I also like the talky ones like <strong>Coode Street</strong> and <strong>Galactic Suburbia</strong> and <strong>The Writer and the Critic.</strong>
For just plain old geeky fun, I kinda love <a href="http://www.theincomparable.com/theincomparable/">The Incomparable</a>. I don't understand why it doesn't get more attention than it does. They have book discussions, gaming discussions, comic discussions, movie discussions, fantasy drafts, all kinds of stuff. They have spin-off podcasts that cover live D&D games (not my thing, but whatever), Star Trek, etc. Good stuff. (No affiliation, just a fan.)comment:www.metafilter.com,2014:site.140678-5628422Wed, 09 Jul 2014 05:53:19 -0800Archer25
"Yes. Something that interested us yesterday when we saw it." "Where is she?" His lodgings were situated at the lower end of the town. The accommodation consisted[Pg 64] of a small bedroom, which he shared with a fellow clerk, and a place at table with the other inmates of the house. The street was very dirty, and Mrs. Flack's house alone presented some sign of decency and respectability. It was a two-storied red brick cottage. There was no front garden, and you entered directly into a living room through a door, upon which a brass plate was fixed that bore the following announcement:¡ª The woman by her side was slowly recovering herself. A minute later and she was her cold calm self again. As a rule, ornament should never be carried further than graceful proportions; the arrangement of framing should follow as nearly as possible the lines of strain. Extraneous decoration, such as detached filagree work of iron, or painting in colours, is [159] so repulsive to the taste of the true engineer and mechanic that it is unnecessary to speak against it. Dear Daddy, Schopenhauer for tomorrow. The professor doesn't seem to realize Down the middle of the Ganges a white bundle is being borne, and on it a crow pecking the body of a child wrapped in its winding-sheet. 53 The attention of the public was now again drawn to those unnatural feuds which disturbed the Royal Family. The exhibition of domestic discord and hatred in the House of Hanover had, from its first ascension of the throne, been most odious and revolting. The quarrels of the king and his son, like those of the first two Georges, had begun in Hanover, and had been imported along with them only to assume greater malignancy in foreign and richer soil. The Prince of Wales, whilst still in Germany, had formed a strong attachment to the Princess Royal of Prussia. George forbade the connection. The prince was instantly summoned to England, where he duly arrived in 1728. "But they've been arrested without due process of law. They've been arrested in violation of the Constitution and laws of the State of Indiana, which provide¡ª" "I know of Marvor and will take you to him. It is not far to where he stays." Reuben did not go to the Fair that autumn¡ªthere being no reason why he should and several why he shouldn't. He went instead to see Richard, who was down for a week's rest after a tiring case. Reuben thought a dignified aloofness the best attitude to maintain towards his son¡ªthere was no need for them to be on bad terms, but he did not want anyone to imagine that he approved of Richard or thought his success worth while. Richard, for his part, felt kindly disposed towards his father, and a little sorry for him in his isolation. He invited him to dinner once or twice, and, realising his picturesqueness, was not ashamed to show him to his friends. Stephen Holgrave ascended the marble steps, and proceeded on till he stood at the baron's feet. He then unclasped the belt of his waist, and having his head uncovered, knelt down, and holding up both his hands.
