Self-described collector of sounds and artist John Kannenberg records the sounds that echo through museums (usually thought of as spaces where silence is enforced) and creating works that "investigate the psychogeography of museums and archives, the processes of making and observing art, the psychology of collection, and the human experience of time."

Frequently smuggling his recorder in, he records noises from children on tours to the noises of mechanical equipment, echos in grand galleries to whispers from people looking at the work on display. His most recent work is a sound map of the Art Institute of Chicago (ten minute excerpt at link). Also available is a sound map of the Egyptian Museum in Cairo (excerpt available here, along with a description of this project, or at previous link.) Meanwhile, museums are slowly branching out into collecting and exhibiting (NYT link) sound art, meaning that someday John Kannenberg may be including the sounds of another artist within his own pieces.

I think Brian Eno would like this. it seems to have that wallpapery quality he speaks of.
