And, if a lot of people make a lot of money and there are a lot of accolades being thrown about, then a lot of credit is going to go to a lot of people, from whoever cut those winning trailers to the designers and animators who got Rocket's fur to look just so to Gunn himself. If comic book people get any credit, chances are it's going to be as a collective (i.e. "Marvel") or under a "Special Thanks" near the end of the end-credit scrawl (IMDb has comics writers Dan Abnett and Andy Lannning receiving writing credit; if that's on the screen near the "written by" credit, then that's awesome).

Just before going to see the Guardians of the Galaxy movie, J. Caleb Mozzocco put together a small guide to the featured characters and their creators.

The New York Times also paid attention to the cartoonists behind the Guardians and their fight for credit:

Like millions of moviegoers over the weekend, Bill Mantlo watched "Guardians of the Galaxy," the Marvel Studios space adventure that sold more than $172 million in tickets worldwide in its first four days of release. The film's success is particularly meaningful to Mr. Mantlo, 62, a comic-book writer who helped create one of the movie's main characters: the foul-tempered, gun-wielding anthropomorphic Rocket Raccoon. Mr. Mantlo did not see "Guardians of the Galaxy" in a theater, but in his bed at the nursing home where he is being cared for after a 1992 accident in which he was hit by a car and left with brain damage. Michael Mantlo, his brother, said Bill owed his health partly to Medicaid and partly to the grass-roots efforts of comics fans, who not only made donations on his behalf but also brought attention to his involvement in creating a character whose value to Marvel had suddenly mushroomed. As Michael explained in a telephone interview, the focus on his brother has encouraged the studio to reconsider its obligations to him. "The more often Bill's name gets mentioned, and the more often he is given public credit for something that he did, the easier it is for me to go to Marvel and say, 'You might want to consider raising your offer.' "

To be fair to Marvel, they did organise that private screening for Bill Mantlo.

The references to Annihilation: Conquest are important, but the article leaves out the preceding event of Annihilation itself (by a number of different creators), which reimagined Drax and Gamora and brought Peter Quill back from obscurity. It was also, I should note, pretty much the best thing that Marvel put out that year. It happened concurrently but separately from Civil War, and was as awesome as CW was lame.

I had been waiting to see this movie since seeing the first trailer, bought tickets a week in advance (only 'cause they weren't selling tickets two weeks in advance) to see it in IMAX the night before opening day. It was worth the wait. One of the best parts was my introduction to The Runaway's song "Cherry Bomb". How had I not heard this before?! Also, the movie was colorful, both literally and in tone! So much occurred during the daylight, with brightly colored spaceships! Gamora was green, Dax grey and red, Rocket brown and orange, Ronan had a lot of purple, Nebula was blue, etc, etc! So great, along with the awesome soundtrack. So... I haven't seen the movie yet, but am I right in believing that it features Thanos, yet not Adam Warlock? Adam Warlock IS in the film, sort of, director James Gunn confirmed it. A cocoon which contains Warlock is seen in a glass container in a museum. Later, after an explosion, the container and cocoon are seen in the background, both broken open. So Warlock will show up later in some other film and since Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel gets her powers from Adam Warlock....

Nothing is confirmed, except next year's Avengers movie will have four prominent female roles, which are Black Widow, Scarlet Widow, Agent Hill(?) and one other unknown role. Hmmm. Anyway, glad to hear Bill Mantlo is getting a bit of recognition and help. The guy was an excellent writer who really understood the comics medium. It's good to see Gene Colan get a mention; he's one of those artists who tends to be forgotten, but absolutely shouldn't be. In addition to co-creating Yondu in the original Guardians of the Galaxy (and recast as a mercenary in the movie), he's also one of the creators of the Falcon and Blade (as well as a character who has an after-the-end-credits cameo). His work was moody and evocative in a way that few could match, and ideally suited for Tomb of Dracula, which he worked on with Marv Wolfman (the creator of Nova), and also Daredevil, although his run on that title was overshadowed by his successor, Frank Miller.

So Warlock will show up later in some other film and since Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel gets her powers from Adam Warlock.... Nerd pedant correction: Carol Danvers never got powers from Adam Warlock. Originally, she got powers from an incident involving the Kree Captain Mar-Vell; later, after losing those powers, she got new ones when the Brood in the X-Men comics messed with her. It's Gamora who, in the comics, got a power upgrade courtesy of Adam Warlock. Personally, I'd like to see Carol in the movies become the first and only Captain Marvel, so maybe she can just get her powers from a Kree gadget without a male predecessor in the mix at all. Throw in some Quasar stuff -- Epoch, the female Eon, could be the one to appoint her Protector of the Universe -- and relegate Mar-Vell to a historical reference that explains why the "Captain Marvel" name resounds through the universe. (Maybe "Mar-Vell" is just the Cosmic Language term for "protector of the Universe" or something?)

After James Gunn and Marvel got some static from people concerned about Bill Mantlo's situation, Bill Mantlo's brother Michael wrote this on Facebook: "FOLKS, FOLKS, FOLKS.....please, enough of the hating on Marvel. Marvel has compensated, is compensating, and will continue to compensate Bill well into the future for anything that he's entitled to compensation for. Please don't spread false or malicious rumors, gang. Bill's relationship with Marvel is EXCELLENT, and I wish for it to continue to be so. And all the false or exaggerated 'facts' being tossed around about his accident (he was NOT in a coma for 'years,' and the family was NOT put into financial ruin or destitution, among other WRONG 'facts'). Yes, Bill was the victim of a horrible and tragic accident. Blowing everything out of proportion does no one any good. I mean what the hell brain? This is because Yondu is quietly one of the most intriguing characters of the movie. You have no idea how much of his act is an act. He seems to be mostly bluster and bad looks, right up until he starts an epic space battle with his personal pirate armada. He threatens and bullies constantly with his mysterious weapon and menacing quips, but it seems to be the same tired schtick again and again, well worn - right up until he kills a dozen Necrons without breaking a sweat. Also, who is his mysterious buyer, if not Thanos, Ronan or The Collector? Why does he really want to know who else is after the gem from his fence? Is he a villain? Anti-hero? Or flat out hero in a very clever disguise? He raised Quill, remember, who is crafty, criminal, self-serving and also deeply moral, committed to self-sacrifice in times of gravest need. Or is he really as he seems, a competent rogue looking for revenge and a paycheck at any cost?

I went to see it again last night, this time dragging along my dad. God damn, is it a fun movie! It's kind of miraculous that Marvel decided to hand a cult director (and Troma alum) $170M to make a comedic space opera involving a gun toting raccoon... and it was a hit! Whatever timeline we're on, it's not the darkest. Also, when I first watched IRON MAN 1, I never imagined we'd be seeing a certain someone in the post-credits stinger of one of these movies. It felt like the filmmakers were saying, "You think this movie was bonkers? We haven't even gotten to the weird shit yet."

We had a discussion afterwards if they digitally punched up his blue skin in post cause he was Very Bright and Very Blue. ( I have some reservations with the movie, which zi 80% enjoyed but came away with feeling that there was a slinky modified cut Floating around I would've liked better, and the standard "boring villain" and "required CGI smash up forth act." complaints. I want to see it again when I'm not feverish and kinda loopy and questioning my taste in Spacemens at least.)

Regarding Captain "Carol Danvers" Marvel and Katee Sackoff's complete tease of late... she kills me. Dead. And I am not even a huge fan (that said, the last Captain Marvel I read, with the "Ivanova from B5" scene? That was so cool I thought I was in ice and my kidneys were as stolen as that scene! I think it will happen. Must happen. For two reasons: Marvel. Katniss. Beating Wonder Woman out of spite. The first two, the third is just hilariously musing. Me? I want to see Monica's Captain Marvel. But I grew up with Roger Stern's Avengers. With Namor, and Hercules, and a Captain Marvel who commanded Captain America's respect. But I digress.

Also, who is his mysterious buyer, if not Thanos, Ronan or The Collector? Why does he really want to know who else is after the gem from his fence? I think Yondu's original buyer was the Broker, his fence. When the Broker backed out upon learning of Ronan's involvement, Yondu decided he'd go straight to the source, and knew that the great levels of interest meant that he needed to know more about what was going on, if only to get the best price. Since the Broker is alive at the end, it suggests that Yondu got his information. So, who is this buyer? It is entirely feasible for it to be The Collector (either directly or through another intermediary) or Thanos himself (through an intermediary...if Ronan scared off the Broker, then I think Thanos would too). Both of them are the sort who might have several lines of approach going on getting what they want, and they don't really care which one pans out. While this is certainly a possible opening for a sequel (hey, it turns out it's Peter's dad!), it's not one I'll be worried about if they don't choose to cover it. Incidentally, agreed on the other points about Yondu; he really seems like he's nothing too much, maybe Jabba-equivalent in power and story role, but then he keeps putting unexpected spins on it.

He says he may be as pretty as an angel but is not one. That was more of a thematic connection than anything else, I think. So, more of a flawed father figure than a literal father. When he and his second in command (Sean Gunn) take off at the end they mention that Peter's dad hired them to retrieve Peter, but they decided to keep Peter instead.

I'd like to know the story how "Spirit in the Sky" made the Awesome Mix soundtrack album but was cut from the movie. (the * in the track listing meant *Not in film). Somebody got sensitive over a potential "Christ Analogy"? (Because Marvel saves that for the multi-ressurrected Captain America?) I am a little disappointed the Awesome Mix didn't hit #1 on the Billboard chart, replacing Weird Al's "Mandatory Fun" (which is, in its own way, kind of a 'mix tape' format), but it's fun to see people already making proposals for [SEMI-SPOILER] Awesome Mix Vol. 2. The one piece of Guardian-alia I want right now is [ALSO SPOILISH] the tiny potted dancing Groot (preferably mechanized)... but NOT as part of a 'Collector's Set' for $359. Sheesh.

I started to instantly come up with an Awesome Mix Volume 2, cause there are some TERRIBLE OMISSIONS from a proper list of goofy glam rock anthems. I mean, you need some Sweet on there, Drive In Saturday By Bowie, Tello's cover of "Tell Him" , ELO's Don't Bring Me Down, Ballrooms Of Mars by T-Rex, and slip in "Love and Romance" by the Slits. That's my mix tape for exploring SPACE and having ADVENTURES I mean.

Also when we do get any Kissing Scene ( for anyone, really) it should be set to Blondie's Atomic. I have lots of opinions someone hire me because of them.

Unfortunately, "Heaven Is A Place On Earth" came out in 1987, so it'd be a little after Quill's Mixtape era. They could always play something by Rare Earth, Earth Wind & Fire, or Manfred Mann's Earth Band... but then, I have lots of opinions that nobody will hire me for. At least they had the good sense to use David Bowie while steering clear of Major Tom. (Also no "Rocket Man". Smart... or "Dancing in Heaven" or "Final Countdown" which were definitely '80s. ) The jury is still out on "The Joker (Some People Call Me the Space Cowboy)", but I see they used a different Steve Miller song... And I'm in full agreement with you on Queen. But maybe they shied away because of the Flash Gordon soundtrack...

Pretty sure that Awesome Mix vol II should also contain some Frampton, perhaps "Something's Happening." I think the second trailer used "Spirit In The Sky." I remember having incredible confusion over the soundtracks to the trailers but they really do fit thematically and were much better choices than "Yet Another Use of 'Lux Aeterna.'"

But maybe they shied away because of the Flash Gordon soundtrack... The thing is, I don't know who owns Flash Gordon, maybe there was a problem in getting it, but Fladh Gordon's 70s reboot by Queen is basically Captain America In Space and shoving The Seven Seas Of Ryne into this 70s style adventure movie would've been DELICIOUS. Go listen to Sweet's Wig Wam Bam and then imagine the Guardians Of The Galaxy having a bar fight set to it.

In my personal plan for the series, the big reveal in Guardians of the Galaxy 3 is a three-way showdown over who Peter's real Dad is - Adam Warlock, who supplied the genetic material and got the fuck out until his ex-lover and spawn-caretaker died, Yondu, who made a decision to protect Peter from that quote-unquote "jackass" with his space-pirate armada, or his Grandpa, who's way the fuck out of his league in outer-space, but seven kinds of tough.

Mezentian: My father, who is 74, said "I only have one thing to say to you: I am Groot." Is there a story behind this? I may have missed it, and I need to know. I've been trying to be more pithy on Metafilter (and in general) lately, but the back story is that my dad never goes out to see movies anymore. He's the one who got me into science fiction and fantasy (he has boxes and boxes of sci-fi digests from the 50's). He's in good health and likes all sorts of awesome stuff still (he was a big fan of Torchwood, for example) and reads voraciously, but since the grandchildren (especially my nieces) were born, most of his movie fare has been Barbie's Christmas Adventure With The Nutcracker or what have you. As it happens, some of the grandkids are just old enough and wanted to go see this film. He went as the reluctant chaperone and said he cheered at the end. He had no idea what he was getting in to and this movie made him more excited than any piece of entertainment we've discussed in 20 years - the last movie I remember him being this amped about was Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. He's a former Air Force officer and isn't what I'd term a "bouncing off the walls" kind of guy, but we had a great, spirited conversation about the movie, quoting all of our favorite lines and discussing the soundtrack. Basically, I love to hear him get that excited about a movie that I was also that excited about. He also told me that he had to explain Kevin Bacon to the grandkids. I wish I had been a fly on the wall for that conversation, because it sounds like the greatest thing ever. Basically the grandkids loved it too and they were all so excited about it that they've convinced my mom to go see it (she leans more to The English Patient than to Galaxy Quest. Three generations of my family all loving the same thing! At the same time! Part of me knows this cross-generational success means there's going to be a bunch of shitty, misguided Hollywood knock-off attempts to capitalize on the success of this film, but I'm ok with that as long as I don't go to see them.
