As we approach the final 500 days to the 2016 US presidential election, and with a smorgasbord of POTUS wannabes, John Ellis Bush has revealed, through the medium of the Twitter, his campaign logo. A day before the bid of "Veto Corleone" is launched in Florida, and a day after Hillary Clinton formally launched her campaign through a rally and smalltown networking, Jeb is the betting favorite to be the Republican candidate, with strong showings for Marco Rubio and Scott Walker. He's also raised a bit of money; however, this hasn't been spent on a completely new logo (also here and here and here and possibly here). Parodies are also starting, as are enhancements. Despite this, Hillary remains the clear favorite to be the next POTUS, with George Clooney a 150/1 outsider at several bookmakers).

Before we get all design nerdy about the logo... This is a pretty perfect logo for a republican candidate to have. This is a decidedly anti-style style of logo. It is simple, and it speaks in very simple ways to people who don't know what serifs are, don't give a fuck about color theory, negative space or any other design principles. It focuses on his nickname, uses an exclamation point unironically and has nothing daring or confusing in it whatsoever. It's terrible design, if you care about design, sure. But the base that republicans have always pretended to represent aren't graphic design people. They aren't creatives, they aren't people who snark about logos online. This logo is actually pretty perfect for his campaign.

Jokes aside, this is a well-chosen logo, and it's pretty clear that Jeb is positioning himself similar to his brother in 2000. You can virtually hear things like "commonsense," "simple," and "traditional" being spoken next to this logo. It's catchy, memorable, exudes the fake-folksy vibe that the Bush family has always excelled at crafting. Even in spite of their family history, they'll be able to call the Clintons elitist -- and get away with it.

So I'm not ruling Jeb out. He can claim Obama invaded Iraq and caused the crash and a decent chunk of the GOP base will eat it up.

I read this article this morning and have renewed hope that we won't have to deal with a Clinton v. Bush race after all. As much as I'm rooting for Bernie Sanders to have a positive effect on this election cycle, I don't think an op-ed comparing this election to the Tony awards (?!) makes a very effective argument for his possible victory. He's the longest of long shots, especially with all the corporate influence in US politics these days. The pragmatic/rational side of me is just hoping that his candidacy will shine some light on humanistic Democratic Socialist politics. I want him to be a counterbalance to the right's socialist bogeyman and prove that Socialism doesn't have to mean a fascist/soviet state. As for the Republicans, I have a hard time seeing how they can win at all. Bush has that name, Walker and Cruz aren't nearly as charismatic as they believe themselves to be, Rubio is a joke, and Rand Paul has too many fringe beliefs to be taken seriously. But then again, I never saw GWB as a realistic candidate in the run-up to the 2000 election, and here we are.

Given who we are as a nation, how in the hell did James Carter ever get elected? Maybe a fluke. Reagan challenged Ford, who was a weak incumbent after being appointed post-Nixon, and he didn't beat him but did effectively splinter the Republican Party enough that they couldn't get behind their nominee. Carter's big advantage was being both a Southern Baptist and an anti-war environmentalist, plus he was far more honest than Nixon, who cast a long shadow over the GOP during that election year. Carter was not a great politician, however. When Reagan returned in 1980 to win the Republican primary, he just steamrolled Jimmy Carter into oblivion during the campaign, with part of the strategy being the infamous Iran-Contra illegal hostage exchange.

It's a distinction without a difference- it can be both, where someone's nickname comes from an acronym of their initials. I'd be willing to bet that Jeb would tell you that's his nickname, because we aren't in the habit of asking people, "What's your nickname or acronym?" The one exception might be GOB from Arrested Development, who was insistent on spelling his nickname with capital letters, IIRC.

He coincidentally picked up a fake folksy name in roughly the same way George coincidentally picked up a fake Texas accent. Ugh, this again. While it's true Bush Junior was born in Connecticut, his family moved to Texas when he was two years old, where he would be reared and educated all the way up through his first years of high school, after which he attended Phillips Academy in Andover, Mass. So, while just about everything about the guy is fake and phony and shallow as a mud puddle, take it from a Texan—the stupid way he talks is 100% authentic.

I think he'll win. Of course I also thought he'd run in previous elections. I absolutely hate that "I know you are but what am I" slogan his team had him lead off with, a tactic politicians and specifically republicans, love to use. But that bastard is probably going to win. And despite having "gone over this before", you know we're going to see that same "well let him win, so everybody can see how messed up the country is with yet another Bush as president". And a bunch of horrible laws will get passed, and the country will get that social regression a lot of on-the-wrong-side-of-history people have been craving, in between coming dangerously close to using racial, ethnic and gendered slurs that they "would be able to use if the country wasn't so p.c." and hoping secretly that they get to cause the death of someone not like them and get away with it, to release their pent up anger at the steady losses of privilege they decry. But yeah, unless somebody comes out of nowhere, he'll win.

The weird thing about the Republican nomination is that I can't see a single viable candidate in all of them. Jeb and Walker probably come closest but neither of their campaigns is doing very well. Usually with the Republicans you can see the obvious nominee from a mile away but this year the race is just baffling.
