Interesting that in 1961, the U.S. Supreme Court held that "state laws which <a href="http://www.columbia.edu/~rr91/3489/hoyt.htm">effectively exclude women from jury pools</a> are not invidious discrimination...and that women tried before the resulting all-male juries have no valid claims under the equal protection clause." The Court reversed the decision in 1975.comment:www.metafilter.com,2002:site.17075-275036Sat, 11 May 2002 22:00:56 -0800mediareportBy: quonsar

It's not hard to envision that culture, and what makes people join the Taliban, if you're getting bashed over the head with some of the material that comes over the Internet. Sometimes I think it would be refreshing to take a break now and then in a country where overt and aggressive expressions of sexuality are less common.
(That said, I'm glad to see the Saudi women making one more step towards freedom.)comment:www.metafilter.com,2002:site.17075-275076Sun, 12 May 2002 00:46:42 -0800sheaugaBy: Postroad

Was the United States a "culture of monkeys" before the final state <a href="http://www.nara.gov/education/teaching/woman/tenn.html">ratified a woman's right to vote</a> in 1920?

Jokes aren't enough, quonsar; you need to apologize and you know it. Even if you believe U.S.-style democracy is the pinnacle of human achievement (<a href="http://www.agron.iastate.edu/courses/agron342/diamondmistake.html">a debateable point</a>) you should at least recognize that many of the things modern Westerners sneer at in Saudi society were part of Western society not all that long ago. Besides, it's obvious that Islamic culture was <a href="http://www.yale.edu/yup/books/094221.htm">far more sophisticated</a> than Western culture 1,000 years ago. They were the first to <a href="http://www.pbs.org/empires/islam/innoalgebra.html">solve quadratic equations</a>, for crying out loud. Even if the poles are somewhat reversed now, the least Westerners can do is not be moronic bigots during the discussion. There's really no excuse for bullshit dismissals of an entire culture, or for bringing the level of discourse here at Metafilter down to 6th-grade level (my apologies to all the 6th-graders in the house). Bite the bullet, admit you were wrong, and let's move on.comment:www.metafilter.com,2002:site.17075-275315Sun, 12 May 2002 19:24:38 -0800mediareportBy: quonsar

Blah blah is about right. I don't support quonsar's "joke", but I wouldn't take kindly to being talked down to either. I don't believe it's the moral high ground; more like an admitted defeat. quonsar was out of line, his words inexcusable, and tangentially I think he's getting off easy because he's an old-timer, which really is quite unfair but a fact of life, but to expect an apology is silly. Monkey does seem racist to me. But that America is in bed with these sick fucks is appalling. Let's reduce our dependence on oil in America and tell the Saudis to go fuck themselves. Their record on human rights is well-know and revolting.

<i>SAUDI Arabia's religious police are reported to have forced schoolgirls back into a blazing building because they were not wearing Islamic headscarves and black robes.
Saudi newspapers said scuffles broke out between firemen and members of the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice who tried to keep the girls inside a burning school in Mecca.
Fifteen girls were killed as they stampeded to escape from the blazing building in the Muslim holy city. Saudi media and families of the victims have been angry over the deaths of the girls in the fire that gutted the school.

"Yes. Something that interested us yesterday when we saw it." "Where is she?" His lodgings were situated at the lower end of the town. The accommodation consisted[Pg 64] of a small bedroom, which he shared with a fellow clerk, and a place at table with the other inmates of the house. The street was very dirty, and Mrs. Flack's house alone presented some sign of decency and respectability. It was a two-storied red brick cottage. There was no front garden, and you entered directly into a living room through a door, upon which a brass plate was fixed that bore the following announcement:¡ª The woman by her side was slowly recovering herself. A minute later and she was her cold calm self again. As a rule, ornament should never be carried further than graceful proportions; the arrangement of framing should follow as nearly as possible the lines of strain. Extraneous decoration, such as detached filagree work of iron, or painting in colours, is [159] so repulsive to the taste of the true engineer and mechanic that it is unnecessary to speak against it. Dear Daddy, Schopenhauer for tomorrow. The professor doesn't seem to realize Down the middle of the Ganges a white bundle is being borne, and on it a crow pecking the body of a child wrapped in its winding-sheet. 53 The attention of the public was now again drawn to those unnatural feuds which disturbed the Royal Family. The exhibition of domestic discord and hatred in the House of Hanover had, from its first ascension of the throne, been most odious and revolting. The quarrels of the king and his son, like those of the first two Georges, had begun in Hanover, and had been imported along with them only to assume greater malignancy in foreign and richer soil. The Prince of Wales, whilst still in Germany, had formed a strong attachment to the Princess Royal of Prussia. George forbade the connection. The prince was instantly summoned to England, where he duly arrived in 1728. "But they've been arrested without due process of law. Reuben did not go to the Fair that autumn¡ªthere being no reason why he should and several why he shouldn't. He went instead to see Richard, who was down for a week's rest after a tiring case. Reuben thought a dignified aloofness the best attitude to maintain towards his son¡ªthere was no need for them to be on bad terms, but he did not want anyone to imagine that he approved of Richard or thought his success worth while. Richard, for his part, felt kindly disposed towards his father, and a little sorry for him in his isolation. He invited him to dinner once or twice, and, realising his picturesqueness, was not ashamed to show him to his friends.
