It's running really slowly for me, so I'm trying to give it time. I'm glad that it's not finicky about accents and allows you to enter in the city's name in language's spellings, but that's got to be more difficult to compute. I also wonder what they're using for source data, since there isn't a unified source of information like a specific census.
So Far:
*I noticed that my attempt to reverse-engineer the European->US City tactic doesn't work as well - I was trying to name random places in Puerto Rico and Mexico for Spain, and I don't think I got one hit - the saint's name trick also doesn't work as well, since Spain wasn't as into setting up missionaries in their own country. Place names in Massachusetts still work fine for England, though.
*The random nice sounding phrases also does not work as well as it did in the US, even after translating.
*What has worked for me: Remembering the cities for Civilization, remembering conference rooms at the international corporation I used to work for, remembering where coworkers were from (if I could spell Polish city names. . .). Clothing terms, styles of food, styles of beer, last names that start with 'of' in various languages, remembering where various historical figures are from.
*I apparently have no idea how large these cities are in comparison to each other. Like, I knew that London was larger than any other city in the UK, but so far it looks like it's nine times larger than any other city I've named there (and dwarfing Paris). That's like if the next biggest city in the US after NYC was Austin. Meanwhile Moscow is like WHAT.comment:www.metafilter.com,2019:site.183585-7804138Sat, 12 Oct 2019 12:56:06 -0800dinty_mooreBy: motty

Spelling was easier for me on this one than the American one. I left out a bunch of accented "e"s for Hungarian cities and the game accepted them anyway, and it also seems programmed to accept cities under different names. (I entered "Gallipoli" thinking it would add the Italian city, but since I didn't specify the country, it added the larger Gelibolu in Turkey instead.)comment:www.metafilter.com,2019:site.183585-7804169Sat, 12 Oct 2019 13:49:44 -0800grandiloquietBy: chainsofreedom

Not too shabby, considering I did way less random-ass guessing in the end compared to the USA quiz. Here are some fun goals for the collaborative map:

Find that last 500,000+ city! I'm starting to think it might be a suburb of one of the larger cities.

Reach 50% of the urban population! Right now, with 4,800 cities, we're at 48.77%.

Is there a city with zero population? The American map had lots.

Explore the periphery! I added some places in the Azores (Ponta Delgada), and the very northern Russian outpost of Amderma. There's some southern stuff that doesn't even show up on the initial map view.

Paint the map red! It's fun to try and fill in empty-looking spaces. So many Greek and Scottish islands...

I added Baltimore (population 347) (where I was on my 39th birthday), in mediocre weather - but I did swim off Clear Island and saw porpoises. But it didn't have Calgary, where I spent my 6th birthday, which has one of the most beautiful beaches in Scotland. Both are the original sources of their namesake large cities in North America. Pennsylvania, South Gloucestershire did not show up.
It did have Ellesmere, my dad's home village whose namesake island is the next largest island to Great Britain, and has a slightly greater population. I closed in the mid-Wales gap with Lampeter, Llandrindod Wells and Buith Wells, and Hawick nearly covered the last gap in Northumberland from over the Scottish border. So England and Wales are virtually fully red. Working through Scotland and Ireland now. There's a couple of towns I've been to whose names are totally eluding me for the moment. I found the last 500,000+ city! It was Kalininskiy, Russia – an administrative district of Saint Petersburg.
I entered a ton of suburbs/districts around Madrid, Berlin and various Russian cities. We now have 56.19% of the population, and 782 out of 829 (94.33%) cities with over 100,000 people! Also Russia is looking considerably more freckled. I'm going to stop now.comment:www.metafilter.com,2019:site.183585-7806275Wed, 16 Oct 2019 10:07:30 -0800oulipian
"Yes. Something that interested us yesterday when we saw it." "Where is she?" His lodgings were situated at the lower end of the town. The accommodation consisted[Pg 64] of a small bedroom, which he shared with a fellow clerk, and a place at table with the other inmates of the house. The street was very dirty, and Mrs. Flack's house alone presented some sign of decency and respectability. It was a two-storied red brick cottage. There was no front garden, and you entered directly into a living room through a door, upon which a brass plate was fixed that bore the following announcement:¡ª The woman by her side was slowly recovering herself. A minute later and she was her cold calm self again. As a rule, ornament should never be carried further than graceful proportions; the arrangement of framing should follow as nearly as possible the lines of strain. Extraneous decoration, such as detached filagree work of iron, or painting in colours, is [159] so repulsive to the taste of the true engineer and mechanic that it is unnecessary to speak against it. Dear Daddy, Schopenhauer for tomorrow. The professor doesn't seem to realize Down the middle of the Ganges a white bundle is being borne, and on it a crow pecking the body of a child wrapped in its winding-sheet. 53 The attention of the public was now again drawn to those unnatural feuds which disturbed the Royal Family. The exhibition of domestic discord and hatred in the House of Hanover had, from its first ascension of the throne, been most odious and revolting. The quarrels of the king and his son, like those of the first two Georges, had begun in Hanover, and had been imported along with them only to assume greater malignancy in foreign and richer soil. The Prince of Wales, whilst still in Germany, had formed a strong attachment to the Princess Royal of Prussia. George forbade the connection. The prince was instantly summoned to England, where he duly arrived in 1728. "But they've been arrested without due process of law. They've been arrested in violation of the Constitution and laws of the State of Indiana, which provide¡ª" "I know of Marvor and will take you to him. It is not far to where he stays." Reuben did not go to the Fair that autumn¡ªthere being no reason why he should and several why he shouldn't. He went instead to see Richard, who was down for a week's rest after a tiring case. Reuben thought a dignified aloofness the best attitude to maintain towards his son¡ªthere was no need for them to be on bad terms, but he did not want anyone to imagine that he approved of Richard or thought his success worth while. Richard, for his part, felt kindly disposed towards his father, and a little sorry for him in his isolation. He invited him to dinner once or twice, and, realising his picturesqueness, was not ashamed to show him to his friends. Stephen Holgrave ascended the marble steps, and proceeded on till he stood at the baron's feet. He then unclasped the belt of his waist, and having his head uncovered, knelt down, and holding up both his hands. De Boteler took them within his own, and the yeoman said in a loud, distinct voice¡ª HoME²¨¶àÒ°´²Ï·ÊÓƵ ѸÀ×ÏÂÔØ ѸÀ×ÏÂÔØ
