Wait... the winter solstice marks the <i>beginning</i> of winter? Surely it should be the middle, no?comment:www.metafilter.com,2002:site.22469-407692Sat, 21 Dec 2002 10:04:56 -0800Pretty_GenericBy: andrew cooke

Pretty_Generic - i've had that conversation with astronomers (who you might think no something about this kind of thing) and there doesn't seem to be much consensus. the argument for having seasons centred on the solstices seem obvious to me, but the reply is that the temperature (and so the "real seasons") on earth lag - while you (here it's the longest day of the year) are tilted most strongly away from the sun today, the northern heisphere will continue to cool for some time yet, so "mid winter" is still to come. i'm not 100% convinced (is the lag really 1.5 months?), but it's certainly going to get a lot hotter here before the end of summer...comment:www.metafilter.com,2002:site.22469-407705Sat, 21 Dec 2002 10:23:28 -0800andrew cookeBy: JanetLand

A very nice noise indeed, but somehow not my idea of a lullaby -- too lively.comment:www.metafilter.com,2002:site.22469-407710Sat, 21 Dec 2002 10:37:57 -0800JanetLandBy: madamjujujive

I wonder what makes a lullaby, mathematically? You'd think it would be frequencies that have the simplest relationships and so ... require the least waking thought to appreciate. But some of these seem to be harmonically pretty complex.comment:www.metafilter.com,2002:site.22469-407719Sat, 21 Dec 2002 11:06:54 -0800Pretty_GenericBy: Pretty_Generic

<em>how's midsummer?</em> pretty good thanks. just been out in the garden rebuilding my bike's front wheel wearing nothing but my undies (which may be a little more information than you need to know right now). how's the cold and miserable midwinter? ;-) (or were you asking whether the same problem with seasons exists? - it does).comment:www.metafilter.com,2002:site.22469-407773Sat, 21 Dec 2002 14:12:40 -0800andrew cookeBy: languagehat

On the definition of winter, I personally go with the tradition of defining it by months (which makes it a lot easier as well as fitting NYC weather better); to quote the <a href="http://www.islandnet.com/~see/weather/almanac/arc_1999/alm99bdec.htm">Weather Almanac</a>: "If we define winter solely by the coldest quarter of the year, the starting date would vary greatly with location in the Northern Hemisphere. Thus, meteorologists and climatologists generally consider December-January-February as the winter months."
A couple of other sites that may help think about it: <a href="http://www.badastronomy.com/bad/misc/badseasons.html" title="The definition of when the seasons begin is at the moment of solstice or equinox; that is, winter (in the north) starts on December 22nd and summer starts on June 22nd. I feel instead that the midpoint of the seasons are really at these times. The seasons themselves start a month and a half before then.">Bad Astronomy</a> and the synopsis <a href="http://www.udel.edu/SynClim/cheng.html" title="The summer extends more than 5 mo in Florida, while it only lasts 3 mo in Maine. In the mid-Atlantic region, there are 2 longer seasons (summer and winter; about 4 mo each) and 2 shorter seasons (spring and fall; about 2 mo each). The seasonal definition proposed here more closely corresponds to phenological responses than do traditional definitions. wish they had more of them, here's the one my mother used to sing by Alice Tegner:
Sov du lilla videung
än så är det vinter
Än så sova björk och ljung
ros och hyacinter
Än så är det långt till vår
innan rönn i blomma står
Sov du lilla vide
än så är det vinter.
Solskensöga ser på dig,
solskensfamn dig vaggar.
Snart blir grönt på skogens stig,
och var blomma flaggar.
Än en liten solskensbön:
vide liten blir så grön.
Solskensöga ser dig.
Skolskensfamn dig vaggar.

"Yes. Something that interested us yesterday when we saw it." "Where is she?" His lodgings were situated at the lower end of the town. The accommodation consisted[Pg 64] of a small bedroom, which he shared with a fellow clerk, and a place at table with the other inmates of the house. The street was very dirty, and Mrs. Flack's house alone presented some sign of decency and respectability. It was a two-storied red brick cottage. There was no front garden, and you entered directly into a living room through a door, upon which a brass plate was fixed that bore the following announcement:¡ª The woman by her side was slowly recovering herself. A minute later and she was her cold calm self again. As a rule, ornament should never be carried further than graceful proportions; the arrangement of framing should follow as nearly as possible the lines of strain. Extraneous decoration, such as detached filagree work of iron, or painting in colours, is [159] so repulsive to the taste of the true engineer and mechanic that it is unnecessary to speak against it. Dear Daddy, Schopenhauer for tomorrow. The professor doesn't seem to realize Down the middle of the Ganges a white bundle is being borne, and on it a crow pecking the body of a child wrapped in its winding-sheet. 53 The attention of the public was now again drawn to those unnatural feuds which disturbed the Royal Family. The exhibition of domestic discord and hatred in the House of Hanover had, from its first ascension of the throne, been most odious and revolting. The quarrels of the king and his son, like those of the first two Georges, had begun in Hanover, and had been imported along with them only to assume greater malignancy in foreign and richer soil. The Prince of Wales, whilst still in Germany, had formed a strong attachment to the Princess Royal of Prussia. George forbade the connection. The prince was instantly summoned to England, where he duly arrived in 1728. "But they've been arrested without due process of law. Reuben did not go to the Fair that autumn¡ªthere being no reason why he should and several why he shouldn't. He went instead to see Richard, who was down for a week's rest after a tiring case. Reuben thought a dignified aloofness the best attitude to maintain towards his son¡ªthere was no need for them to be on bad terms, but he did not want anyone to imagine that he approved of Richard or thought his success worth while. Richard, for his part, felt kindly disposed towards his father, and a little sorry for him in his isolation. He invited him to dinner once or twice, and, realising his picturesqueness, was not ashamed to show him to his friends. Stephen Holgrave ascended the marble steps, and proceeded on till he stood at the baron's feet. He then unclasped the belt of his waist, and having his head uncovered, knelt down, and holding up both his hands.
