Fake lie-detector reveals women's sex lies - "Women are more likely than men to lie about their sex lives, reveals a new study ... Women who thought their responses might be read said they had had an average of 2.6 sexual partners, compared with 3.4 partners for those who thought their answers were anonymous. But those who thought they would be caught out by the polygraph reported an average of 4.4 partners." I'm guessing a similar study done on men would reveal that as the likelihood of getting caught in a lie increases, the number of partners claimed would decrease...

Actually, they did test men in this study as well, and found little change. In fact, there was a slight (but not statistically significant) increase when hooked up to the lie detector.

The average number means nothing what's important is the median. For example if %90 of the population has 5 sexual partners or less over a lifetime and the other %10 has 6 to 5000, it will skew the average to a much higher number. This is in fact how it really is a few people have a huge number of partners they are called "super nodes". The same thing can be seen in networks like the internet which is how Google is designed. So what we need is a Google to find the super-node sex partners.

2.6 partners? 4.4? Does having a .6 partner mean I got to second base? Serious though, people lie. Men lie and women lie. It's just what people do. What may be more interesting are the motivations individuals have for inflating or deflating the number os sexual partners they have had. Culturally I think it is more accepted to be a amorous man (a stud) then a woman (a slut.) I'd assume that men would inflate the number of sexual contacts just as women would deflate them. Does this describe anything about the genders? No. It only shows the influence of culture on our ideas of gender, what is acceptable behavior and what is not.

Men overestimate the number of sex partners they have had in their lives. I'm googling for answers to my query, if I find anything I post it here tomorrow. Right now I'm supposed to go out and drink beer with .6 of a sex partner.

Reminds me of an old rule of thumb: when asking the question "how many sexual partners have you had?" multiply a woman's answer by 3, and divide a man's answer by 3.

OK, I'm going to come out and say it: Does anyone else think that the accepted lifetime partner count (11 for men/9 for women) is absurdly low? And this particular study was performed with college-age people? I never met anyone in college who'd had only 2 or 3 partners. (Perhaps this is because I was on my back most of the time. ::rimshot::)

this kinda disturbed me...because american pop culture encourages everybody to be a "supernode", so to speak...just think of "the real cancun"...not representative by any means, but PRESENTED as representative. so, having said that, how the hell are 18-25 year olds only at 4 partners? i mean, sure, the crowd i hang around with (young-to-mid-20-floridian-parents) married their high school sweethearts, so they're trending towards 1 or 2... but none of them went to college, and none of them had extended periods of being single. and i consider myself kind of an elitist when it comes to relationships (read that as: i find it hard to get a date), but i've still had a few MULTIPLES of that amount...and that was BEFORE i got married. thus: americans are sluts.
