<a href="http://tlb.org/eunicycle.html">The Electric Unicycle</a> makes transportation a breeze: <em>"You lean forward to accelerate, lean backwards to brake, and gyrate your arms wildly to turn."</em> (Invented by the man who thought his own <a href="http://tlb.org/scooter.html">homemade Segway</a> had one wheel too many)post:www.metafilter.com,2005:site.43318Thu, 07 Jul 2005 09:19:03 -0800Robot JohnnyunicyclesegwayscooterdiytransportationinventorvideoBy: dreamsign

Very cool. Especially with the (necessary) tilt-correction. I'm a half-assed unicyclist myself, and it takes me forever to get anywhere on my 20". Was thinking of picking up the big Coker or looking into one of these new fangled machines with gears, but this would solve my problem. As I'm also putting my motorcycle on the block, this would keep my life blissfully single-wheeled. Thanks, RJ!comment:www.metafilter.com,2005:site.43318-976121Thu, 07 Jul 2005 09:41:30 -0800dreamsignBy: jinx

Pretty neat stuff, the auto-correction bit is nice.
As an engineering project, this is cool, as a practical means of getting from point A to point B, it leaves a fair bit to be desired.
And shouldn't he be wearing a helmet?comment:www.metafilter.com,2005:site.43318-976145Thu, 07 Jul 2005 10:00:51 -0800fenriqBy: BIGSAGE136

is that a kill-switch in your pocket or are you just...
speaking as a (manually-operated, human powered) unicyclist, i am appalled.
but i must admit, imaging a future with sidewalks filled with people riding these gizmos does make me smile a bit.comment:www.metafilter.com,2005:site.43318-976264Thu, 07 Jul 2005 11:17:04 -0800RockyChryslerBy: fenriq

I don't see any real future for a motorized unicycle aside from a curiousity.
crunchland, the Segway was waaaaay over hyped as the next big revolution in transportation. This is just a cool application of ideas and it works.
I'll stick with my gas powered two wheeled motorcycle to get me to and from work. But when a viable electric or alternate fuel motorcycle becomes available (and by viable I mean something that can perform to nearly the same levels as my current bike), I'll switch over.
What makes me smile is imagining a troop of chimps charging around a circus ring on these things. Because chimps always make me smile.comment:www.metafilter.com,2005:site.43318-976319Thu, 07 Jul 2005 11:48:06 -0800fenriqBy: aubilenon

fenriq: regarding a helmet, my trying-to-lear-to-ride-a-unicycle experience is that when the unicycle falls the rider usually winds up on their feets. Of course anything's possible, but the chance of landing on your head might not be a lot greater than that for a runner.comment:www.metafilter.com,2005:site.43318-976399Thu, 07 Jul 2005 12:42:31 -0800aubilenonBy: Gary

<i> I don't get why this is cool, but the segway isn't.</i>
Because a goofy looking homemade electric vehicle is cool. If he were trying to mass market it for $4000 a piece, then it would receive the same sort of scorn. This is also lot more portable than the Segway. An electric unicycle seems like something you could easily keep under your desk during the day (it's also weighs 30lbs instead to 70). It's by no means a practical way to get around, but it's closer.comment:www.metafilter.com,2005:site.43318-976632Thu, 07 Jul 2005 16:31:03 -0800GaryBy: dg

I must admit that I still lust after the gas-powered skateboard/scooter I saw around UBC campus (yes, the TMNT had them first).
And hey, who doesn't want a <a href="http://www.dself.dsl.pipex.com/MUSEUM/TRANSPORT/motorwhl/motorwhl.htm#du">monowheel</a>? (warning: page with many pictures)comment:www.metafilter.com,2005:site.43318-976914Thu, 07 Jul 2005 22:05:55 -0800dreamsignBy: crocos

"Yes. Something that interested us yesterday when we saw it." "Where is she?" His lodgings were situated at the lower end of the town. The accommodation consisted[Pg 64] of a small bedroom, which he shared with a fellow clerk, and a place at table with the other inmates of the house. The street was very dirty, and Mrs. Flack's house alone presented some sign of decency and respectability. It was a two-storied red brick cottage. There was no front garden, and you entered directly into a living room through a door, upon which a brass plate was fixed that bore the following announcement:¡ª The woman by her side was slowly recovering herself. A minute later and she was her cold calm self again. As a rule, ornament should never be carried further than graceful proportions; the arrangement of framing should follow as nearly as possible the lines of strain. Extraneous decoration, such as detached filagree work of iron, or painting in colours, is [159] so repulsive to the taste of the true engineer and mechanic that it is unnecessary to speak against it. Dear Daddy, Schopenhauer for tomorrow. The professor doesn't seem to realize Down the middle of the Ganges a white bundle is being borne, and on it a crow pecking the body of a child wrapped in its winding-sheet. 53 The attention of the public was now again drawn to those unnatural feuds which disturbed the Royal Family. The exhibition of domestic discord and hatred in the House of Hanover had, from its first ascension of the throne, been most odious and revolting. The quarrels of the king and his son, like those of the first two Georges, had begun in Hanover, and had been imported along with them only to assume greater malignancy in foreign and richer soil. The Prince of Wales, whilst still in Germany, had formed a strong attachment to the Princess Royal of Prussia. George forbade the connection. The prince was instantly summoned to England, where he duly arrived in 1728. "But they've been arrested without due process of law. Reuben did not go to the Fair that autumn¡ªthere being no reason why he should and several why he shouldn't. He went instead to see Richard, who was down for a week's rest after a tiring case. Reuben thought a dignified aloofness the best attitude to maintain towards his son¡ªthere was no need for them to be on bad terms, but he did not want anyone to imagine that he approved of Richard or thought his success worth while. Richard, for his part, felt kindly disposed towards his father, and a little sorry for him in his isolation. He invited him to dinner once or twice, and, realising his picturesqueness, was not ashamed to show him to his friends. Stephen Holgrave ascended the marble steps, and proceeded on till he stood at the baron's feet.
