I'd just like to take this moment to remind everyone about <a href="http://www.rifftrax.com ">http://www.rifftrax.com </a>, Mike Nelson's new project wherein you can download an mp3 to play concurrently with modern movies. He is often joined by other members of the MST3K cast.

I like it. But I'm a huge MST fan.
When I first looked, I didn't see my favorite riff from "The Mole People". (something like, "<em>This movie's nothing but ropes and asses</em>".) But then I saw it was a distributed project. First SETI, then Folding at Home, now MST3K. I will be signing up shortly...comment:www.metafilter.com,2006:site.55831-1474998Thu, 26 Oct 2006 14:15:19 -0800ObscureReferenceManBy: gurple

Well, difficult to believe as it may be, there's a world <em>outside</em> the USA; and some of its inhabitants do, strangely enough, appreciate this oddball humor. But (since we poor benighted foreigner have not been raised on a steady diet of American soaps from the 50s and 60s) it is sometimes kinda hard to get jokes about minor celebrities, ads or songs that never made it across the pond. So, yeah, I do enjoy going through such lists and checking off throwaway lines that I didn't "get" - just because this website does not appeal to you that doesn't mean that no one else will find it useful...
@GeekAnimator: personal favourites and recommendations are 1005: <em>The Blood Waters of Dr. Z</em> (scientist turns himself into a fish and somehow fails to conquer the world) and 0812: <em>The Incredibly Strange Creatures Who Stopped Living and Became Mixed-up Zombies</em> (really, really bad amateur entertainment makes up three quarters of this stinking heap of trash).comment:www.metafilter.com,2006:site.55831-1475018Thu, 26 Oct 2006 14:40:18 -0800PontifexPrimusBy: sonofsamiam

The Rifftrax are good. Most of them only have Mike, not the otehr guys from the show, which I think is a weakness. And the quality varies from movie to movie. But they're still fun, and it's nice to have new stuff coming out.
Which episode of MST to start with depends on what kinds of movies you find funny and endearing vs which you find intolerable. There should be an episode guide on the web somewhere showing which are sci-fi and which are biker-gang movies etc.
Try at least a couple from both the Joel (early) and Mike (late) eras. They have very different personalities. I would do Joel's first. Have fun!comment:www.metafilter.com,2006:site.55831-1475063Thu, 26 Oct 2006 15:37:11 -0800LobsterMittenBy: LobsterMitten

Speaking as someone who has the entire Joel years (including the KTMA's on VHS and saw all episodes when they were first run) *deep breath*, this is hard to answer.
The ones I always seem to go back to are:
Catalina Caper
<small>"I see a gifted singer all hopped up on goof-balls"
(Tom Servo in reference to a young Little Richard during a musical number).</small>
Santa Claus Conquers The Martians
<small>"That had BETTER be chocolate pudding!"
(Crow in reference to one of the kids being pulled from a hiding place).</small>
Master Ninja
<small>"Say what you will but Claude Atkins has a nice rump."
(Joel in reference to Claude Atkins walking away from the camera).</small>
Keep circulating the tapes!

In addition to Rifftrax, MST3K fans should also check out the new project by <a href="http://filmcrewonline.com/">The Film Crew</a> (Mike, Bill and Kevin from MST3K). They are going to be riffing some b-movies and you can vote on their site for which one they should do first. I think it's the closest thing we're going to get to an MST3K revival.

I hadn't really watched in 10 years. Basically all the episodes listed in this thread are there (cut up into smaller parts on Gootube). <a href=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=li5-f7GpYSU&mode=related&search=>The Touch of Satan</a>, <a href=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WZ0NYNLdbik>High School Big Shot</a> and <a href=http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=8590533394044637016&q=MST3K+duration%3Along&hl=en>Space Mutiny</a> were good. <a href=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1qdOo7YJbM4>Godzilla vs. Megalon</a>, <a href=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V3SNbdVrkl8>Eegah!</a>, and <a href=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tWJmbMTnWMw>Time of the Apes</a> gave me all kinds of Joel Nostalgia.
You've also just <i>have</i> to take a look at the <a href=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mVFjRxMXcQA>MST Scrapbook</a> with lots of pre-"Comedy Channel" footage when it was on KTMA, back in the day when Joel has a mullet, the show looks like cable access, and Tom Servo was voiced by a <a href=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J._Elvis_Weinstein>17 year old</a>.comment:www.metafilter.com,2006:site.55831-1475137Thu, 26 Oct 2006 17:36:39 -0800dgaicunBy: EarBucket

I may be in the minority here, but Giant Spider Invasion is probably my favorite episode of them all, for many reasons, but foremost among them being this line that Tom utters:
"Ed Wood's 'Lolita'"
An amazing brilliant observation. I tend to prefer the sci-fi channel episodes; the writing seems tighter and I'm fond of Bill Corbett's more acerbic and angry Crow. It makes me so happy to think that humanity made this show.comment:www.metafilter.com,2006:site.55831-1475311Thu, 26 Oct 2006 22:27:40 -0800deafmuteBy: loquacious

"love pads the film"
"I gotta pick the fridge up at the airport"
"There's a LADDER IN THE WAY"
*cries tears of laughter*
Once I saw Joel & the guys at a convention. There was a Q & A session and people lined up at the mic to ask their questions. It was made clear that each person got one question. After they asked their question, each was given a dollar bill by Joel.
One guy asked his question, got his dollar, and stayed at the mic. He goes, "I have another question" and started asking it, whereupon Joel took the guy's dollar back (to raucous applause).

"Yes. Something that interested us yesterday when we saw it." "Where is she?" His lodgings were situated at the lower end of the town. The accommodation consisted[Pg 64] of a small bedroom, which he shared with a fellow clerk, and a place at table with the other inmates of the house. The street was very dirty, and Mrs. Flack's house alone presented some sign of decency and respectability. It was a two-storied red brick cottage. There was no front garden, and you entered directly into a living room through a door, upon which a brass plate was fixed that bore the following announcement:¡ª The woman by her side was slowly recovering herself. A minute later and she was her cold calm self again. As a rule, ornament should never be carried further than graceful proportions; the arrangement of framing should follow as nearly as possible the lines of strain. Extraneous decoration, such as detached filagree work of iron, or painting in colours, is [159] so repulsive to the taste of the true engineer and mechanic that it is unnecessary to speak against it. Dear Daddy, Schopenhauer for tomorrow. The professor doesn't seem to realize Down the middle of the Ganges a white bundle is being borne, and on it a crow pecking the body of a child wrapped in its winding-sheet. 53 The attention of the public was now again drawn to those unnatural feuds which disturbed the Royal Family. The exhibition of domestic discord and hatred in the House of Hanover had, from its first ascension of the throne, been most odious and revolting. The quarrels of the king and his son, like those of the first two Georges, had begun in Hanover, and had been imported along with them only to assume greater malignancy in foreign and richer soil. The Prince of Wales, whilst still in Germany, had formed a strong attachment to the Princess Royal of Prussia. George forbade the connection. The prince was instantly summoned to England, where he duly arrived in 1728. "But they've been arrested without due process of law. They've been arrested in violation of the Constitution and laws of the State of Indiana, which provide¡ª" "I know of Marvor and will take you to him. It is not far to where he stays." Reuben did not go to the Fair that autumn¡ªthere being no reason why he should and several why he shouldn't. He went instead to see Richard, who was down for a week's rest after a tiring case. Reuben thought a dignified aloofness the best attitude to maintain towards his son¡ªthere was no need for them to be on bad terms, but he did not want anyone to imagine that he approved of Richard or thought his success worth while. Richard, for his part, felt kindly disposed towards his father, and a little sorry for him in his isolation. He invited him to dinner once or twice, and, realising his picturesqueness, was not ashamed to show him to his friends. Stephen Holgrave ascended the marble steps, and proceeded on till he stood at the baron's feet. He then unclasped the belt of his waist, and having his head uncovered, knelt down, and holding up both his hands. De Boteler took them within his own, and the yeoman said in a loud, distinct voice¡ª HoME²¨¶àÒ°´²Ï·ÊÓƵ ѸÀ×ÏÂÔØ ѸÀ×ÏÂÔØ
