Idle nostalgia led me to check on the mp3 page for Bulb Records (early home of Quintron and Andrew WK).

That all reminded me of space/noise rockers Gravitar, whose drummer Ben Cook has put up a fair amount their music (and other music he's made) for free. Oh, and he has a (rarely updated) music blog, which mentioned the Weird Sound Generator and Noizehole.

All told, about three hours of free music.post:www.metafilter.com,2008:site.70209Tue, 25 Mar 2008 16:01:50 -0800klangklangstonmusicfreemp3creativecommonsquintronbulbrecordsandrewwknoizeholebulbwsgweirdsoundgeneratorblognoisespacerockfreakoutBy: erskelyne

Speaking of Quintron, I just saw Miss Panacea at a local coffeehouse. Not performing, or anything, just tapping away at her computer.comment:www.metafilter.com,2008:site.70209-2057885Tue, 25 Mar 2008 16:15:24 -0800erskelyneBy: stinkycheese

Nice!
I loves me some Gravitar (heaviest brothers band ever, and Harold went on to Easy Action with John Brannon, who are also great). And everything I've heard from Bulb has been awesome too.
Thanks KK.comment:www.metafilter.com,2008:site.70209-2057890Tue, 25 Mar 2008 16:18:48 -0800stinkycheeseBy: klangklangston

Well, I'd encourage you to buy some Bulb stuff too, since they've pretty much stopped putting out music until they can get rid of the backstock. They had a couple of distributors crumble on 'em, and Pete Larson (the guy behind Bulb) has basically said that he's not going to throw any more good money after the bad he's sunk until it gets a little closer to break-even. Which is a shame, because he was a total force for awesome in my young listening days.
I didn't realize that Harold went on to Easy Action; I've been enjoying a lot of Laughing Hyenas tracks lately, so maybe I'll move along to the newer Action stuff.comment:www.metafilter.com,2008:site.70209-2057891Tue, 25 Mar 2008 16:22:16 -0800klangklangstonBy: p3t3

AnnArborBasementShows-filter! I think I own almost half their catalog just from growing up there and going to lots of local shows in the early 90s. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.
One of my favorite shows from that scene was Wolf Eyes and Caroliner in an Ypsilanti basement - I think shortly after Wolf Eyes formed (it was the first time I saw them anyways). A lot of those Bulb bands that I remember were always good at making shows visually entertaining with stage props, theatrics, etc- usually made for fun shows.comment:www.metafilter.com,2008:site.70209-2057941Tue, 25 Mar 2008 17:00:59 -0800p3t3By: Falconetti

One of my favorite concert experiences was seeing Quintron years ago at Speak in Tongues in Cleveland. I brought a college friend with me who just moved from Pakistan to go to school and he was totally blown away by the weirdness.comment:www.metafilter.com,2008:site.70209-2057946Tue, 25 Mar 2008 17:04:59 -0800FalconettiBy: nonmyopicdave

The members of Prehensile Monkey Tailed Skink (Bulb Records 7" is out of print) went on to form The Monkey Power Trio which has a few hours of free MP3s on their site. I should say "our site" as this is a complete and utter self-link that I'm hoping is kosher.
We just finished doing interviews and providing outtakes for an upcoming 4 hour special on KFJC, which appears to stream even more music of this ilk if it strikes your fancy.comment:www.metafilter.com,2008:site.70209-2057959Tue, 25 Mar 2008 17:12:14 -0800nonmyopicdaveBy: klangklangston

Why, Nonmyopicdave, that 7" is available on the Bulb Singles collection. Also, I had no idea that PMTS was related to MPT; Mark Maynard's the only one of y'all that I know, and I thought he moved up from Georgia after the heyday of Bulb.comment:www.metafilter.com,2008:site.70209-2057978Tue, 25 Mar 2008 17:29:56 -0800klangklangstonBy: unknowncommand

This is great.
Also, thanks for the Monkey Power Trio info. My first band covered "Anarchy is Stupid"!comment:www.metafilter.com,2008:site.70209-2058455Wed, 26 Mar 2008 05:36:05 -0800unknowncommandBy: unknowncommand

One of my favorite Bulb memories is MC Trachiotomy playing an outdoor show in Houston, TX. There was a huge hole in his shorts, and his testicles were pretty much in plain sight once you figured out what was going on. Someone handed him a towel and tried to explain, but he was rocking out too hard, so he just wiped off his face with it and threw it to the crowd. (It was also a great show not just because of that). Also, when Quintron set the drum buddy on fire. He is such a fantastic performer.comment:www.metafilter.com,2008:site.70209-2058464Wed, 26 Mar 2008 05:53:20 -0800unknowncommandBy: stinkycheese

"Yes. Something that interested us yesterday when we saw it." "Where is she?" His lodgings were situated at the lower end of the town. The accommodation consisted[Pg 64] of a small bedroom, which he shared with a fellow clerk, and a place at table with the other inmates of the house. The street was very dirty, and Mrs. Flack's house alone presented some sign of decency and respectability. It was a two-storied red brick cottage. There was no front garden, and you entered directly into a living room through a door, upon which a brass plate was fixed that bore the following announcement:¡ª The woman by her side was slowly recovering herself. A minute later and she was her cold calm self again. As a rule, ornament should never be carried further than graceful proportions; the arrangement of framing should follow as nearly as possible the lines of strain. Extraneous decoration, such as detached filagree work of iron, or painting in colours, is [159] so repulsive to the taste of the true engineer and mechanic that it is unnecessary to speak against it. Dear Daddy, Schopenhauer for tomorrow. The professor doesn't seem to realize Down the middle of the Ganges a white bundle is being borne, and on it a crow pecking the body of a child wrapped in its winding-sheet. 53 The attention of the public was now again drawn to those unnatural feuds which disturbed the Royal Family. The exhibition of domestic discord and hatred in the House of Hanover had, from its first ascension of the throne, been most odious and revolting. The quarrels of the king and his son, like those of the first two Georges, had begun in Hanover, and had been imported along with them only to assume greater malignancy in foreign and richer soil. The Prince of Wales, whilst still in Germany, had formed a strong attachment to the Princess Royal of Prussia. George forbade the connection. The prince was instantly summoned to England, where he duly arrived in 1728. "But they've been arrested without due process of law. They've been arrested in violation of the Constitution and laws of the State of Indiana, which provide¡ª" "I know of Marvor and will take you to him. It is not far to where he stays." Reuben did not go to the Fair that autumn¡ªthere being no reason why he should and several why he shouldn't. He went instead to see Richard, who was down for a week's rest after a tiring case. Reuben thought a dignified aloofness the best attitude to maintain towards his son¡ªthere was no need for them to be on bad terms, but he did not want anyone to imagine that he approved of Richard or thought his success worth while. Richard, for his part, felt kindly disposed towards his father, and a little sorry for him in his isolation. He invited him to dinner once or twice, and, realising his picturesqueness, was not ashamed to show him to his friends. Stephen Holgrave ascended the marble steps, and proceeded on till he stood at the baron's feet.
