<a href="http://www.exactitudes.com/">Tableaux:</a> In 1994 Ari Versluis and Ellie Uyttenbroek made a series of 12 photographs of have gabbers and put the pictures in a tableau. They've been making tableaus of types of people for 14 years now and it's all on their site. Some random examples: <a href="http://www.exactitudes.com/series.php?nr=03">gabber bitches Rotterdam 1996</a>, <a href="http://www.exactitudes.com/serie.php?nr=13">football supporters Rotterdam 1997</a>, <a href="http://www.exactitudes.com/serie.php?nr=17">smas Rotterdam 1997</a>, <a href="http://www.exactitudes.com/serie.php?nr=34">scream Beijing 1999</a>, <a href="http://www.exactitudes.com/serie.php?nr=43">bundaboys Rio de Janeiro 2000</a>, <a href="http://www.exactitudes.com/serie.php?nr=52">skins Rotterdam 2002</a>, <a href="http://www.exactitudes.com/serie.php?nr=69">girls on their first communion Maastricht 2006</a>, <a href="http://www.exactitudes.com/serie.php?nr=99">retired Dutch men</a>, <a href="http://www.exactitudes.com/serie.php?nr=75">proper girls Rotterdam 2006</a>, <a href="http://www.exactitudes.com/serie.php?nr=79">yupsterboys New York 2006</a>, <a href="http://www.exactitudes.com/serie.php?nr=80">yupstergirls New York 2006</a>, <a href="http://www.exactitudes.com/serie.php?nr=92">pin-ups London 2008</a>, <a href="http://www.exactitudes.com/serie.php?nr=95http://www.exactitudes.com/serie.php?nr=95">city girls London 2008</a>, <a href="http://www.exactitudes.com/serie.php?nr=102">hipsters Rotterdam 2008</a>, <a href="http://www.exactitudes.com/serie.php?nr=105">flexmanagers Rotterdam/Paris 2008</a>, <a href="http://www.exactitudes.com/serie.php?nr=109">the girls of the affluent 7th district of Paris 2008</a>, <a href="http://www.exactitudes.com/serie.php?nr=90">geeks in London 2008</a></a> <br /><br />This post was triggered by seeing <a href="http://www.exactitudes.com/serie.php?nr=112">this tableau</a> in todays NRC paper of so called "<i>sapeurs</i> in Paris; men of Congolesian descent who are part of La Sape, le Société des Ambianceurs et Personnes Élégantes. A lot of pictures have been added since 2003 and a lot of new metafilter members joined. So I thought people would like to see these fascinating pictures.
It's not against metafilter policy to post a link after such a time I think.
But feel free to flag the post.comment:www.metafilter.com,2008:site.76168-2321188Sat, 01 Nov 2008 06:18:40 -0800joukeBy: twoleftfeet

atreides, in the 1990s gabber was <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gabber">a type of hardcore house music</a> and <a href="http://www.exactitudes.com/serie.php?nr=1">a type of person that they pictured</a> associated with the music.
The word is not derived from English 'to gab' but from Dutch 'gabber' = mate, pal, from the Jiddisch 'chever'= friend.comment:www.metafilter.com,2008:site.76168-2321244Sat, 01 Nov 2008 08:37:23 -0800joukeBy: greenie2600

ardgedee, you're right; the Bechers started with tableaux like this. <a href="http://www.masters-of-fine-art-photography.com/02/artphotogallery/photographers/bernd_and_hilla_becher_01.html">Some examples of their pictures</a>.
Personally I think that categorising people as if they were butterflies that you're collecting is mesmerising. These pictures have been appearing in Dutch newspapers for about a decade and it often shows a person that you'd see on the street and wouldn't be able to place in the context of their <a href="http://www.exactitudes.com/serie.php?nr=5">trendy sub culture</a>, <a href="http://www.exactitudes.com/serie.php?nr=109">social stratum</a> or <a href="http://www.exactitudes.com/serie.php?nr=74">age group</a>.
So I think these pictures are very powerful when they depict people you see on the street everyday. Which isn't totally true for non-Dutch mefites I expect.comment:www.metafilter.com,2008:site.76168-2321262Sat, 01 Nov 2008 08:59:02 -0800joukeBy: greenie2600

I had to look it up; 'sma' is a word for 'girl' in Dutch modern multi-cultural street language. I'm not part of that subculture so I can't tell you precisely. But it's probably a word stemming from Surinam sranantongo as these girls seem to stem from the Rotterdam community of Surinam descent.
These subcultures or obscure for me, a Dutchman, let alone for Americans or Brits.comment:www.metafilter.com,2008:site.76168-2321269Sat, 01 Nov 2008 09:09:50 -0800joukeBy: micayetoca

Clicking through the tableaux, I was reminded of Karl Schroeder's <a href="http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0765350785/metafilter-20/ref=nosim/">Lady of Mazes</a> where, in a far, far future, hundreds of billions of people are interconnected and there are always other people who have led more or less the same life as yours. It's small by current standards but, yes, it's surprisingly good. They don't have much to show by the capital-G Great Artists, but the curators have an eye for finding excellent work by the less famous.comment:www.metafilter.com,2008:site.76168-2322081Sun, 02 Nov 2008 06:43:54 -0800ardgedeeBy: goodnewsfortheinsane

Defendbreukelen, when you google for "tektonik dance" you'll find some youtube videos. And I found this definition:
<i>A new style of underground dancing originating in France, combining popping and rave style on filthy and eletro beats, requires high energy and lots of arm movements and shuffling feet.</i>comment:www.metafilter.com,2008:site.76168-2322999Mon, 03 Nov 2008 08:55:55 -0800joukeBy: not_on_display

"Yes. Something that interested us yesterday when we saw it." "Where is she?" His lodgings were situated at the lower end of the town. The accommodation consisted[Pg 64] of a small bedroom, which he shared with a fellow clerk, and a place at table with the other inmates of the house. The street was very dirty, and Mrs. Flack's house alone presented some sign of decency and respectability. It was a two-storied red brick cottage. There was no front garden, and you entered directly into a living room through a door, upon which a brass plate was fixed that bore the following announcement:¡ª The woman by her side was slowly recovering herself. A minute later and she was her cold calm self again. As a rule, ornament should never be carried further than graceful proportions; the arrangement of framing should follow as nearly as possible the lines of strain. Extraneous decoration, such as detached filagree work of iron, or painting in colours, is [159] so repulsive to the taste of the true engineer and mechanic that it is unnecessary to speak against it. Dear Daddy, Schopenhauer for tomorrow. The professor doesn't seem to realize Down the middle of the Ganges a white bundle is being borne, and on it a crow pecking the body of a child wrapped in its winding-sheet. 53 The attention of the public was now again drawn to those unnatural feuds which disturbed the Royal Family. The exhibition of domestic discord and hatred in the House of Hanover had, from its first ascension of the throne, been most odious and revolting. The quarrels of the king and his son, like those of the first two Georges, had begun in Hanover, and had been imported along with them only to assume greater malignancy in foreign and richer soil. The Prince of Wales, whilst still in Germany, had formed a strong attachment to the Princess Royal of Prussia. George forbade the connection. The prince was instantly summoned to England, where he duly arrived in 1728. "But they've been arrested without due process of law. They've been arrested in violation of the Constitution and laws of the State of Indiana, which provide¡ª" "I know of Marvor and will take you to him. It is not far to where he stays." Reuben did not go to the Fair that autumn¡ªthere being no reason why he should and several why he shouldn't. He went instead to see Richard, who was down for a week's rest after a tiring case. Reuben thought a dignified aloofness the best attitude to maintain towards his son¡ªthere was no need for them to be on bad terms, but he did not want anyone to imagine that he approved of Richard or thought his success worth while. Richard, for his part, felt kindly disposed towards his father, and a little sorry for him in his isolation. He invited him to dinner once or twice, and, realising his picturesqueness, was not ashamed to show him to his friends. Stephen Holgrave ascended the marble steps, and proceeded on till he stood at the baron's feet. He then unclasped the belt of his waist, and having his head uncovered, knelt down, and holding up both his hands.
