It's worth noting from the second link that the picture was originally taken "in a specific red color of light emitted by hydrogen gas called Hydrogen-alpha and then color inverted to appear blue."
It's still a great picture, but does absolutely nothing to explain where the Fruity Oaty Bars come from.comment:www.metafilter.com,2009:site.86371-2808491Wed, 04 Nov 2009 05:46:43 -0800explosionBy: TedW

That is good! If you want more like this, a Google image search something like "<a href="http://images.google.com/images?q=sun%20h%20alpha&sourceid=navclient-ff&rls=GGGL,GGGL:2006-13,GGGL:en&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&hl=en&tab=wi">sun h alpha</a>" will get a ton of similar pics. I particularly like<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/cameran/218951272/"> this one</a>. I would love to try my hand at that sort of astrophotography, but the filter required is <a href="http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/575852-REG/Coronado_0_5SM40_10_SolarMax_40_H_Alpha_Dual.html">not cheap</a>. It filters out all visible light except that emitted by a <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H-alpha">specific transition of the hydrogen atom</a> and is widely used in astronomy.comment:www.metafilter.com,2009:site.86371-2808494Wed, 04 Nov 2009 05:48:43 -0800TedWBy: mccarty.tim

They Might Be Giants make it very clear that the sun is not made of gas, but is made of plasma. I know from listening to interviews with the band that they researched this thoroughly. Yet, the description of the image (written by a "professional astronomer") says that the sun is "an extremely large ball of bubbling hot gas." Who am I supposed to believe, a novelty rock duo, or an anonymous internet astronomer? Astronomers will often not bother to distinguish between plasma and gas, especially when trying to interest the public who might well not know the difference anyway.
Heck, cosmologists will often bundle the vast majority of matter into the category 'dust', and for an astronomer a metal is any element past helium. As a science it's not the most pedantic.comment:www.metafilter.com,2009:site.86371-2808579Wed, 04 Nov 2009 07:09:01 -0800eddBy: Joe Beese

The accommodation consisted[Pg 64] of a small bedroom, which he shared with a fellow clerk, and a place at table with the other inmates of the house. The street was very dirty, and Mrs. Flack's house alone presented some sign of decency and respectability. It was a two-storied red brick cottage. There was no front garden, and you entered directly into a living room through a door, upon which a brass plate was fixed that bore the following announcement:¡ª The woman by her side was slowly recovering herself. A minute later and she was her cold calm self again. The exhibition of domestic discord and hatred in the House of Hanover had, from its first ascension of the throne, been most odious and revolting. The quarrels of the king and his son, like those of the first two Georges, had begun in Hanover, and had been imported along with them only to assume greater malignancy in foreign and richer soil. The Prince of Wales, whilst still in Germany, had formed a strong attachment to the Princess Royal of Prussia. George forbade the connection.
