Shetland Sheepdogs are herding dogs. Herding behavior is basically predatory stalking minus all the biting. As you watch this video, consider that the dog is doing an outstanding job of keeping the baby under control.

It seems to me, when puppies play-fight with each other it is distinctly different behavior from genuine, bloodletting fighting. So maybe this is "play-herding" and does not have the aggression or nipping that you would get during actual herding.comment:www.metafilter.com,2010:site.93161-3152469Thu, 24 Jun 2010 18:26:01 -0800East Manitoba Regional Junior Kabaddi Champion '94By: amethysts

My only direct experience with a Sheltie is one I encounter in my neighborhood while walking my dog. The owner brings it to the local park and stands on the lawn while the dog runs around and around at top speed on a retractable leash, barking shrilly and incessantly, non-stop. You can hear the barks for blocks around. As my dog and I get near and the other dog spots us, it goes absolutely nuts and barks even more loudly and shrilly, straining the leash, while the owner just watches and does nothing. I can't tell what my dog thinks of all that. The (very cute) Sheltie in that youtube looks rather sane by comparison.comment:www.metafilter.com,2010:site.93161-3152501Thu, 24 Jun 2010 18:35:07 -0800christopheriousBy: Greg_Ace

Oh, I don't know. They can be yippy, that's for sure. I had one when I was younger. She was the smartest dog I've ever taken care of. On the other hand, I used to live next door to a woman who had two, and she let them live outside in the backyard when the weather was decent, and those dogs tirelessly barked at everything.comment:www.metafilter.com,2010:site.93161-3152719Thu, 24 Jun 2010 20:39:33 -0800crunchlandBy: jacquilynne

My parents had a Shepherd that they had to get rid of when my brother learned to walk. The Shepherd was a little too enthusiastic about shepherding my brother -- would keep him pinned in the corner of any room he was in, wouldn't let anyone but my parents near him, etc. That was a dog that needed a whole herd of sheep, and a single toddler was really no substitute.comment:www.metafilter.com,2010:site.93161-3152725Thu, 24 Jun 2010 20:43:31 -0800jacquilynneBy: The Lurkers Support Me in Email

I like when the baby snort laughs (around 1:30). When my son was that age he would start laughing so hard that he would inevitably snort. The noise of the snort would make him laugh even harder, leading to more snorting and even more laughing and even more snorting until tears popped out of his eyes like a little cartoon character.
I plan to tell that story to his first date.comment:www.metafilter.com,2010:site.93161-3152747Thu, 24 Jun 2010 21:04:02 -0800jamaroBy: Jimmy Havok

My herding dog does this exact same thing with our cats. The cat's reaction tends to be less hysterical laughter and more puffing up twice their normal size and frantically spinning around so the dog can't sneak up on them, also; swatting everything in sight.
This gets the dog so excited she starts to zoom around like she's been eating amphetamines all day. Unfortunately, when this happens, it invariably goes on for too long. Not because I'm cruel and want to watch a scared cat, but because I'm laughing so hard, I'm incapable of helping. (This makes me no less cruel, just not as malicious.)comment:www.metafilter.com,2010:site.93161-3153320Fri, 25 Jun 2010 08:25:22 -0800quinBy: sneebler

Once my brother was looking after a friend's house out in the country. The people had two Shelties, and neither of them seemed very bright to me. Occasionally a small plane would fly over, and the bigger dog would perk up his ears, spot the plane and then set off running after it. My brother said he would basically run until he met an object that he couldn't jump over. But clearly good with kids!comment:www.metafilter.com,2010:site.93161-3153378Fri, 25 Jun 2010 08:55:51 -0800sneeblerBy: Increase

"Yes. Something that interested us yesterday when we saw it." "Where is she?" His lodgings were situated at the lower end of the town. The accommodation consisted[Pg 64] of a small bedroom, which he shared with a fellow clerk, and a place at table with the other inmates of the house. The street was very dirty, and Mrs. Flack's house alone presented some sign of decency and respectability. It was a two-storied red brick cottage. There was no front garden, and you entered directly into a living room through a door, upon which a brass plate was fixed that bore the following announcement:¡ª The woman by her side was slowly recovering herself. A minute later and she was her cold calm self again. As a rule, ornament should never be carried further than graceful proportions; the arrangement of framing should follow as nearly as possible the lines of strain. Extraneous decoration, such as detached filagree work of iron, or painting in colours, is [159] so repulsive to the taste of the true engineer and mechanic that it is unnecessary to speak against it. Dear Daddy, Schopenhauer for tomorrow. The professor doesn't seem to realize Down the middle of the Ganges a white bundle is being borne, and on it a crow pecking the body of a child wrapped in its winding-sheet. 53 The attention of the public was now again drawn to those unnatural feuds which disturbed the Royal Family. The exhibition of domestic discord and hatred in the House of Hanover had, from its first ascension of the throne, been most odious and revolting. The quarrels of the king and his son, like those of the first two Georges, had begun in Hanover, and had been imported along with them only to assume greater malignancy in foreign and richer soil. The Prince of Wales, whilst still in Germany, had formed a strong attachment to the Princess Royal of Prussia. George forbade the connection. The prince was instantly summoned to England, where he duly arrived in 1728. "But they've been arrested without due process of law. They've been arrested in violation of the Constitution and laws of the State of Indiana, which provide¡ª" "I know of Marvor and will take you to him. It is not far to where he stays." Reuben did not go to the Fair that autumn¡ªthere being no reason why he should and several why he shouldn't. He went instead to see Richard, who was down for a week's rest after a tiring case. Reuben thought a dignified aloofness the best attitude to maintain towards his son¡ªthere was no need for them to be on bad terms, but he did not want anyone to imagine that he approved of Richard or thought his success worth while. Richard, for his part, felt kindly disposed towards his father, and a little sorry for him in his isolation. He invited him to dinner once or twice, and, realising his picturesqueness, was not ashamed to show him to his friends. Stephen Holgrave ascended the marble steps, and proceeded on till he stood at the baron's feet. He then unclasped the belt of his waist, and having his head uncovered, knelt down, and holding up both his hands. De Boteler took them within his own, and the yeoman said in a loud, distinct voice¡ª HoME²¨¶àÒ°´²Ï·ÊÓƵ ѸÀ×ÏÂÔØ ѸÀ×ÏÂÔØ
