The most amusing thing about this is that most of those articles are from the beginning/middle of the year, and virtually all of them are out of date by now.
(Also, it's a Lifehacker link, which means Gawker, which means rampant SEO, and kind of bad writing)comment:www.metafilter.com,2010:site.98349-3411954Thu, 09 Dec 2010 11:42:33 -0800schmodBy: Pomo

Less than a third of the way through December and we've already been presented with several "best of 2010" lists. It's not just Xmas promotions that seem to come earlier each year.comment:www.metafilter.com,2010:site.98349-3412000Thu, 09 Dec 2010 12:09:53 -0800fredluddBy: Stagger Lee

"DIY FOOD PROJECTS" makes me deeply sad inside.

This is not innovation. And seriously? DIY food? That post was more depressing than the Gulf of Mexico oil spill. Take that 2010.comment:www.metafilter.com,2010:site.98349-3412007Thu, 09 Dec 2010 12:13:18 -0800Stagger LeeBy: FAMOUS MONSTER

I dunno, I actually like Lifehacker. In that one Gawker blog's case, the things I see there that I don't already know are sufficiently interesting enough to keep it above my disconnect annoyance level. (That is, the point where something willfully bugs me enough that I close it in disgust. Here's a hint to any webmasters who might be reading this: if your page immediately plays advertising sounds at me, that level starts out at over 100%. That crap is one of the reasons I don't watch TV anymore.)comment:www.metafilter.com,2010:site.98349-3412095Thu, 09 Dec 2010 12:54:32 -0800JHarrisBy: Dmenet

For all its faults, Lifehacker is the best excuse for the existence of the Gawker Media Network. Lotsa usefulness if you avoid the ~20% really stupid items (hacking food? no) and the ones that don't apply to your lifestyle (just try not to obsess over WHY they don't apply).
And for the annoyance of early year-end lists, that's another thing you can blame the music/radio industry for. DECADES ago, Billboard re-aligned the 'year' for its music charts to MidNovember-thru-MidNovember to give itself plenty of time to make a 'year-end special issue' and deliver it to radio stations to give them plenty of time to produce a 'year-end special show' and take two weeks off for Christmas. Every other media entity has been jealous of that schedule and slowly working toward doing it themselves since the '80s.comment:www.metafilter.com,2010:site.98349-3412110Thu, 09 Dec 2010 13:03:05 -0800oneswellfoopBy: Chocolate Pickle

I'd like to see a list of the top neurosis and personality defects which Lifehacker's suggestions help fuel:
1. ADD - never mind what you are supposed to be doing...here's a new gesture-driven screensaver that you can spend all day configuring...
2. Paranoia - and a method for encrypting your files which is resistant even to attacks by any quantum computers the CIA might have up their sleeves to track you.
3. OCD - we show you how to classify your MP3 collection by the vowel sounds in the composer's forename
4. Kleptomania - and how to organise your day so that you have more time to watch your multi-terrabyte collection of torrented movies
5. Multiple Personality Disorder - because why else would you really need to be able to boot into 3 separate operating systems
6. Narcissism - and writing comments, beneath our articles about how none of these problems apply to your perfect world
7. Gluttony - our favourite pizzas can be yours too
8. Credulousness because we wanted to tell you how our lives were radically improved by cleaning up our registry settings and buying the stuff we link to on the convenient sidebar.comment:www.metafilter.com,2010:site.98349-3413297Fri, 10 Dec 2010 05:36:58 -0800rongorongoBy: ersatz

"Yes. Something that interested us yesterday when we saw it." "Where is she?" His lodgings were situated at the lower end of the town. The accommodation consisted[Pg 64] of a small bedroom, which he shared with a fellow clerk, and a place at table with the other inmates of the house. The street was very dirty, and Mrs. Flack's house alone presented some sign of decency and respectability. It was a two-storied red brick cottage. There was no front garden, and you entered directly into a living room through a door, upon which a brass plate was fixed that bore the following announcement:¡ª The woman by her side was slowly recovering herself. A minute later and she was her cold calm self again. As a rule, ornament should never be carried further than graceful proportions; the arrangement of framing should follow as nearly as possible the lines of strain. Extraneous decoration, such as detached filagree work of iron, or painting in colours, is [159] so repulsive to the taste of the true engineer and mechanic that it is unnecessary to speak against it. Dear Daddy, Schopenhauer for tomorrow. The professor doesn't seem to realize Down the middle of the Ganges a white bundle is being borne, and on it a crow pecking the body of a child wrapped in its winding-sheet. 53 The attention of the public was now again drawn to those unnatural feuds which disturbed the Royal Family. The exhibition of domestic discord and hatred in the House of Hanover had, from its first ascension of the throne, been most odious and revolting. The quarrels of the king and his son, like those of the first two Georges, had begun in Hanover, and had been imported along with them only to assume greater malignancy in foreign and richer soil. The Prince of Wales, whilst still in Germany, had formed a strong attachment to the Princess Royal of Prussia. George forbade the connection. The prince was instantly summoned to England, where he duly arrived in 1728. "But they've been arrested without due process of law. They've been arrested in violation of the Constitution and laws of the State of Indiana, which provide¡ª" "I know of Marvor and will take you to him. It is not far to where he stays." Reuben did not go to the Fair that autumn¡ªthere being no reason why he should and several why he shouldn't. He went instead to see Richard, who was down for a week's rest after a tiring case. Reuben thought a dignified aloofness the best attitude to maintain towards his son¡ªthere was no need for them to be on bad terms, but he did not want anyone to imagine that he approved of Richard or thought his success worth while. Richard, for his part, felt kindly disposed towards his father, and a little sorry for him in his isolation. He invited him to dinner once or twice, and, realising his picturesqueness, was not ashamed to show him to his friends. Stephen Holgrave ascended the marble steps, and proceeded on till he stood at the baron's feet. He then unclasped the belt of his waist, and having his head uncovered, knelt down, and holding up both his hands. De Boteler took them within his own, and the yeoman said in a loud, distinct voice¡ª HoME²¨¶àÒ°´²Ï·ÊÓƵ ѸÀ×ÏÂÔØ ѸÀ×ÏÂÔØ
