Not to be weird, but this is the first FPP I've really clicked on since the Giffords thread. Honestly? The best part is that even though I do not speak a word of Russian, or really because of it, I can just hear these guys' tone of voice, and realize that amusement at animals is really universal.
Even if you're a dude in a shack with a baby bear and a tomcat and you have oddly decided to let the bear attempt to groom the cat, you are going to laugh when the cat seems to be putting up with it for just . . a little . .longer.comment:www.metafilter.com,2011:site.99381-3459030Mon, 10 Jan 2011 19:50:20 -0800Medieval MavenBy: crunchland

That's it? That cat put up with a lot of abuse, least of all, the foot of the dumbass trying to keep it closer to the bear as it tried to get away, and the upshot is that the cat got a few whacks at the cub? My cats attack their dinner more than that cat attacked the bear cub.

Two summers ago I did manual labor at a remote retreat center in the North Cascades, and (supposedly) it had been a bad berry summer, so the bears were coming into the village a lot more than usual. Some early mornings, guests would wake up, walk out the second floor door onto their lodge porch and, instead of seeing a family of deer eating grass or a fog dissipating with rays of light, their eyes would meet with a black bear ripping through cardboard and other random trash (all food was kept inside one building, so the bears really were desperate).
It quickly became a problem, so a bunch of us who worked outdoors in the village were called together one morning. Our boss told us that if the bears ever get inside a building, the village was legally obligated to call the Forest Service and have the bears shot. For a village run by Lutheran hippies, it soon became a top priority to keep the bears (and their many cubs) away. People were put on bear watch, circling the perimeter with radios and horns. Every time someone saw a bear it became this huge deal where you had to shout to all the other staff around you and then you would all form a group and pick up sticks and stones to throw towards the bears to scare them off.
But it was amazing because here were these huge wild beasts that we needed to both protect the village from and protect the bears from us. When I'd spot one, a rush of fear would at first come on and I'd yell bear! automatically, not even sure if any other staff were around. But then all these other people would just seem to appear out of nowhere and we'd all charge and yell and act ridiculous and feel courageous. It was such a strange experience, regularly screaming and throwing stones at huge, hungry creatures and I doubt I'll get to do it again.
And, no bears got shot! Even though one got about a foot into the pottery basement, technically warranting a bounty on it's head.comment:www.metafilter.com,2011:site.99381-3459084Mon, 10 Jan 2011 20:21:49 -0800CorduroyBy: oddman

Meh, that poor old cat. That is not a happy cat. Excuse me if I overthink a bear and cat video on the internet and spoil the party, as well as potentially gloss over the cultural relevancy of the standards of cat and bear cub care in what appears to be rural or semi-rural Russia, that's not a happy cat. And it's no place for a young bear, either.
The bear cub seems to obsessed with the cat's earwax, to the point it appears that it's very nearly trying to earnestly eat the cat's head. Having seen this behavior in other mammals I think the bear is going after the salt and minerals in the cat's earwax, which could be a sign that the bear cub is malnourished. Which is what would happen if people were raising it on scraps instead of foraging in the wild or a studied diet in a zoo.
If I discard the nominal amount of anthropomorphized "Aww, cute, different species of mammals playing together and not actually eating each other" I'm objectively left with a scene with two rather unhappy and mistreated animals.comment:www.metafilter.com,2011:site.99381-3459104Mon, 10 Jan 2011 20:30:06 -0800loquaciousBy: nickyskye

Awww. it's very lovable that animals know that infant or toddler behavior is innocent, if aggravating, and doesn't require the retaliatory response understandable when there is a deliberate provocation by an adult. Even when the infant is one from another species.
That marmalade Russian cat was admirably patient and then set healthy boundaries, which the bear cub was tempted to playfully overstep but got the message.
So interesting the complex social messages in such a short visual story.comment:www.metafilter.com,2011:site.99381-3459118Mon, 10 Jan 2011 20:35:18 -0800nickyskyeBy: iconomy

The bear cub seems to obsessed with the cat's earwax
Cats themselves are obsessed with cat's earwax. Have you ever gotten into a cat's ears with your fingers? And then later let them sniff your fingers? They will lick your fingers and sniff and lick and sniff and sniff and lick...
Cat ear interiors seem to be a subject of great fascination to mammals that are cats, and apparently bears.comment:www.metafilter.com,2011:site.99381-3459193Mon, 10 Jan 2011 21:15:28 -0800hippybearBy: staggernation

From my experience with cats, that's one of the slowest-to-anger cats in history.
I stayed in a guesthouse in South Africa which had a resident Siamese kitten and a youngish Great Dane.
The Great Dane took great pleasure in moving the kitten about in its mouth from place to place, and the kitten didn't seem to mind overly - despite getting covered in gallons of dog slobber each time.
There was also a husky, which looked at the pair of them with eyes that said it thought them both utterly stupid. But mostly it just looked hot and in need of some snow.comment:www.metafilter.com,2011:site.99381-3459490Tue, 11 Jan 2011 04:10:52 -0800MuffinManBy: DU

I wouldn't jump to any conclusions; my bulldog does the exact same thing to our cats and she is not malnourished. I'm always amazed at how rough she can get, pinning the cat's neck to the floor with one leg while making free with the cat's interior ear, yet both cats respond to this treatment with adoration. Eustace, in fact, prefers the bulldog to us humans. I guess I should stop giving them treats and start licking their earwax if I want to be first in their estimation.comment:www.metafilter.com,2011:site.99381-3459600Tue, 11 Jan 2011 06:26:05 -0800Secret Life of GravyBy: Decani

I had a cat that got into a fight with a policeman's German Shepherd after the cop and his dog decided to hop into my garden while looking for a burglar. Hendrix was a very territorial cat and took great exception to this. She launched herself at the dogs face and sank claws and teeth right in there. She took some bite wounds to the head and neck but was basically okay after the dog managed to shake her far enough off that I was able to grab her.
It was worth it for the look on that dog's face and the policeman's disbelieving exclamation of "What the FUCK? Is that a cat? THAT'S A CAT? What the fuck, cat?"comment:www.metafilter.com,2011:site.99381-3459648Tue, 11 Jan 2011 07:16:30 -0800DecaniBy: crunchland

"Yes. Something that interested us yesterday when we saw it." "Where is she?" His lodgings were situated at the lower end of the town. The accommodation consisted[Pg 64] of a small bedroom, which he shared with a fellow clerk, and a place at table with the other inmates of the house. The street was very dirty, and Mrs. Flack's house alone presented some sign of decency and respectability. It was a two-storied red brick cottage. There was no front garden, and you entered directly into a living room through a door, upon which a brass plate was fixed that bore the following announcement:¡ª The woman by her side was slowly recovering herself. A minute later and she was her cold calm self again.
