I had been wondering where tom7 had gone! Lately I've become much more sensitive to people who just stop making things and are never heard from again, due to it taking a whole heap of time and energy to make videos like this, and also because of plain simple mortality. I'm so glad tom7 is still out there making these. (And I'm also glad DoctorFedora is posting them here.)

Euler angles are actually a pretty bad way to [represent orientations], especially for computational geometry. Famously, Euler wasn't that good at math, so he didn't know how to do this a good way.

No, no, no! Regular Polytopes was Coxeter's seminal 1947 work. Regular Complex Polytopes was written thirty years later. The former is fun and accessible; the latter is probably cursed and I refuse to acknowledge it.

(I highly recommend Regular Polytopes, mostly for the math but also partly for the chummy "oh yes, my friend John Flinders, son of the famous Egyptologist" vibe.)

AND YES I SEE REGULAR POLYTOPES BEING ASSIGNED A PUBLICATION DATE OF 1973, THAT'S THE THIRD EDITION, THAT IS A BULLSHIT WAY OF LOOKING AT IT

(he's referencing Regular Polytopes, but the link earlier in the thread was to Regular Complex Polytopes, which is a different book by the same author. I am not actually worked up over which edition is cited.)

I'd like to take a moment just to admire and appreciate tom7's style. There are so many traps lying in wait for the earnest Youtuber looking for an audience, and they sidestep all of them. No horrible distracting sound effects, the editing is lively but tasteful, the content is always interesting and entertaining. They do not speak in pseudo-Received-Pronounciation Youtuber voice. They don't time compress the pauses between their sentences. They're so so good.

IIRC, most of his YT projects are also SIGBOVIK submissions. So an annual cadence is more or less the publishing history, afaict. The 2025 proceedings include a paper by one Thomas Murphy VII, but the conference homepage has a certain charm of its own.

The noperthedron ending is such a downer and was previously on metafilter: "pardon me, do you have Prince Rupert in a self-similar hole?"

I also learned about Unicode Tech Note 27 Known Anomalies in Unicode Characters, which is a delightful collection of oops'es by committee.
